When they went and nerfed Steps of Faith because it'd have blocked people out of expansion content, it was the probably the biggest indicator that being a poor performer was "okay".

I'm still salty over that. I wasn't even the best player back when it was released but /damn/ did I love the challenge of that fight and figuring out strategies to beat it with my FC. It wasn't even that hard compared to the content we get these days, but apparently it was just too much for too many people.
Well, I don't think that's actually the case. I think it was a bad game design decision that they needed to correct. There is a place for hard content and the MSQ is not it. That's why you get completely optional hard content now like the unending coil or even extreme primals. None of them are needed to get to the next patch or expansion but for players who enjoy a challenge (or not playing with one hand up their butt) they are available.
The fight was already easy before nerf and I one shot it pre nerf. It's not bad game design for people to open up their eyes a bit more, or is that too much to ask for these days? SoF was never hardcore and im afraid when you say that.
lol...you should reread your sig.
anyway, your opinion on the fight, and my opinion of the fight even, are pretty much irrelevant when most of the player base is yelling at Squeenix to nerf it. And yeah, you should probably be afraid of how easy most people want stuff to be. That's why it's good they are making more hard optional content.
Why? And also there are many fights asked for nerfing and many wasnt.
Care to explain why people can't even do zurvan at 70? Im mostlikely scared of you saying it was hardcore when it wasnt. Because, lets be honest here... if majority of players wasnt silently carried they would ask for more nerf. They just happened to be with the same minded people when they did the fights they asked to be nerfed. Example 70lvl people can't kill zurvan.
I didn't say it was "hardcore", I said it was hard enough for many people to complain to SE about it and for them to think that it was the right thing to do. Zurvan isn't a good example, since the only thing that actually requires it is the anima weapon quest. It's not MSQ.Why? And also there are many fights asked for nerfing and many wasnt.

So you'd rather current Step's design where you actually ignore all of the mechanics and still kill the boss? My post isn't about how there isn't any challenging content, it's that content, even to the highest level, is so easy you can basically afk. In fact, you can have 1 basically dead weight in O4S and still carry them through it if you tried hard enough. I think content that is story based should expect you to eventually try learning how to do things. You don't have to be perfect. You don't have to be the best. I just want content to expect more than 1 button rotations from the party. That's not a bad design choice. You don't have to hold people's hands.
See my last post... my opinion on how hard I would like a game to be doesn't mean anything in the MSQ. The MSQ is the main story gate. Many types of people play the game. Some want story, some want to play dress up and erp in kurogane. So, that part of the game has to be designed to the LCD. If it wasn't there would be fewer people paying subs. Squeenix knows this, so now they make optional hard stuff for people who like it. It's pretty simple.
