Is this really the case? Not saying you are wrong, just haven't been in a position where it mattered one way or the other (Granted, I run as a SCH, but still). Either it just didn't do enough damage to bother with, or it was at 100% and a wipe anyways.
I started leveling my SAM. Some FC friends were doing levelling and had a spot for a DPS. They were a SMN and SCH. We queue up and get Satasha with a sprout GLD tank. Poor guy was 19 and in level appropriate gear, but even synched down we still almost matched him
In HP. He had maybe 20 more than us. He was a good tank. He was using flash and shield lob and his aggro combo. Even with us using diversion, we kept ripping hate. It went smooth enough, I felt a little bad. I've been in his shoes before.
If you're at the edge it does like 2500 damage.
It does actually matter. You can save a potential wipe if you go to the sides and pop cooldowns, and even if you meet the timer it still takes a lot of strain off the healers if they're having a hard time of it. Personally if you make the DPS check I just throw Sacred Soil and shrug it off as the boss is pretty easy to recover from but if one group isn't pulling their weight going to the sides is definitely preferable.
Which is fair enough, just as I said, I've always run it as a SCH (Usually with my FC, so WHM cohealer) and frankly, the shields+burst heals means anything short of a full wipe on the Ultimate basically doesn't matter. Useful to know for those fringe cases, though. It does actually matter. Yeah, just tested this out, standing off to the side of the map results in the boss dealing drastically decreased damage. I literally took 0 damage as a Bard with Divine Veil as my only mitigation buff by standing at the very edge of the map.
And there is absolutely nothing about the animation that indicates that this is even a thing, although from a logic standpoint, it DOES make sense.
Bit late in posting, however Tuesday morning I learned Mateus has a soft enrage. Yes, the DPS was so low we reached a point where there is no space spot for the pulsating AoEs. You can still mitigate through the high damage but he repeats it every set rotation. So what was the issues? All three tanks completely ignored adds, no one plugged up the water spouts or popped bubbles, thus we had a ton of the little ice sprites going around murdering the DPS. We did eventually clear only because my friend was on RDM and actually took up raise duty to spare my MP. I actually ran out at times on White Mage of all jobs. There were that many people dying or just taking damage. We didn't make it far with Hash Browns though.
I am confused about this one paladin in Shisui...
Gear in the i260-i270 range, using cooldowns (after being asked to, after wiping on the first pull due to using none).
But it was like healing a tank made of tissue paper. Sometimes I'd get to throw in some holy-cure-holy-cure, but sometimes his health would just spike down from 90% to 5% in what seemed like one hit.
I have no idea...
EDIT: I checked my own lvl62 i270 dark knight and noticed I had about 8k more HP than that paladin did. Got down to his 28k by un-equipping both my chest piece and pants. I doubt a few pieces being 260 makes that kind of a difference, maybe some of his gear was broken. Which raises even more questions, as the game warns you about that now.

Love how the tank gets snippy at me and my co-healer on the final boss of WoD just because he and 90% of the dps in our group (and the raid....) died to unavoidable meteor damage.
Yet he was completely silent when the MT was turning Cerberus every which way and cleaving people. :T
queued into rabanastre last night for
maybe the sixth time and the other 7 party members weren't wearing their job crystals................ needless to say they did okay safe for a few hiccups; i have no clue how we made the dps checks.
Maybe he was using STR accesories.I am confused about this one paladin in Shisui...
