I don't know about y'all, but I have way more problems with people that refuse to listen to my advice after numerous deaths and/or complete wipes then I've ever had with fellow mentors.
As for the status symbol argument: I don't even have mentor roulette unlocked but I still wear the crown. Why? Because I like to help, can carry most things more often than not as an above-average healer, and typically know what I'm doing. I'm not going to write an essay spoiling an entire fight, of course, but if asked, I'm more than happy to mention the essentials in a sentence or two; it's just the right thing to do.
I may have enough bad experiences with fellow mentors for the both of us then. Most of the time, it's mentors who queue up for Mentor Roulette, and then ISNTANTLY refuse to do anything until they are kicked because they got an EX ARR primal. Last one I remember was two other mentors along with myself in there, and both of them(a RDM and a tank) refused to help, and just kept saying to do it under PF, and to kick them. I was trying to help those sprouts/newbies, but it can only go so far when other mentors were flooding the chat with demands to be kicked so they could queue up for another mentor roulette to get their mount.
I dunno if this strategy is even doable anymore. It's been my experience lately that more than half of the Mentor Roulettes I sign up for are Ex Primals. Maybe it's because I'm on Aether, and Aether includes both Gilgamesh and Balmung - locked servers with low newbie populations, and therefore less folks doing Guildhests and other EZ Mode Mentor Roulettes. Regardless, on Aether, at least, a Mentor's likely gonna have to pull the afk-til-kicked trick an awful lot before they wind up in a cherry Roulette.I may have enough bad experiences with fellow mentors for the both of us then. And, for what it's worth, while I've had folks bail on the Ex Primals I get after a few wipes, I haven't seen anyone, mentor or not, simply refuse to participate. The majority of the Ex Primals I see, we manage to pull off a win (though it sometimes takes most of the 60 minute duration to do so).
I've had people bail after a few wipes too, and also being on Aether data center, I get my fair share of the EX primals. Some nights I get nothing but guildhest when I go in there, the odd time I will get one of the 24-mans. But all other times, it's an EX primal(usually Ifrit or Ramuh). I admit I did bail on one the other day(Ramuh EX) because I didn't realize the time, and none of the sprouts were listening to the advice that was given(such as NEVER go on the tanks side of the fight...BRDs love being on that side apparently), but it's a very rare occurrence(3 in the whole time I've been a mentor - since about 3.2) that I just leave one of them, and it's usually because after 5+ wipes people still aren't using the advice given. And, for what it's worth, while I've had folks bail on the Ex Primals I get after a few wipes, I haven't seen anyone, mentor or not, simply refuse to participate. While there are some mentors that are complete trolls and lack common sense in one way or another most mentors get frustrated that people don't listen. Example during roulette selections a mentor will normally say they will give hints/explanations/ or stand back and observe to see how it plays out. -.- It doesn't help that after 2 wipes and a mentor gives his input he gets blasted , or even after 5 wipes, and told that they know how to play by both sprouts and other mentors. It's sad there are some people who only wear the mentor status for the perks you can get rather than actually help out. Also if you see a mentor cut him some slack if they are trying to do good. Listen to the advice and at least say thank you I will keep it in mind even if you choose to discard it. People seem to miss the biggest point of mentors, They are normally experience players that have experience, can guide you, and are there to help if you have questions. IT IS NOT OUR JOB AS MENTORS TO CARRY ANYONE.

There are some good mentors - however most of my experience with mentors has been negative. Went to Hullbreaker with a friend, got two mentors in duty finder -- about 1/2 way through they bail on us "because we weren't that good". Hmm . I thought mentors were supposed to help? Similar experiences with other mentors.
Some people in our FC recently got mentor status - and all they want to do now is level up all their classes and do stuff without the rest of us. Hopefully this is just a phase.
But to answer the original question -- YES - based on my experience most mentors are a blight. I get better help from non-mentors.
Nope. It's fine. Doesn't even have rewards really.
I'm a mentor and I'd gladly help anyone who asks. Too bad no one asks.
The thing about experiences like this, though, is that the negative experience has nothing to do with the fact that the guy was a mentor, and everything to do with the fact that the guy was a douchebag. There's nothing to stop a douchebag from becoming a mentor - but there's also nothing about being a mentor that encourages being a douchebag. There are some good mentors - however most of my experience with mentors has been negative. These guys may stick in your head because they SHOULD, in theory, adhere to a higher standard - but honestly, they're no more common among mentors than they are among other players. I'm sure other players provide just as many bad experiences, but the mentors are the ones you remember. The game does nothing to prevent bad eggs from becoming mentors, but don't mistake this to mean that bad eggs GRAVITATE toward becoming mentors. It's simply not the case.
Sometime ago, as a partisan to abolishing/remaking the mentor system, I learned it was working as intended for thr Japanese playerbase (given their gaming culture). This leads me to believe that it will never be given another look by SE, specifically for the NA/EU playerbase.
I just do wish there was a way to inform newbies and experienced players alike that not all mentors are "mentors".
Healing DRK is literally... the same since ShB. The reason why people think it's a meme to heal nowadays because DRK receives very little to no buff to their sustainability vs 3 other tanks getting something useful. If you're capable of healing DRK back in ShB (or any tanks), then you'll heal EW DRK just fine.
