Instanced dungeons become dull faster when you can just do them over and over and over and over again. Open world content doesn't have the same feeling.

Um, I'm pretty sure Yoshida may have exaggerated a bit. We'll still see plenty of open world content I'm sure. Heck, we're getting hamlet defense in 1.21.
Most likely Yoshi will make 50% Instanced Areas & 50% Open World Content but from the way things are looking, I think Yoshi is preventing certain mistakes FFXI had in the early times in regard to loot where Open World had the upper hand of rewards. So this time round, his probably going to let Instanced Areas have better loot drops than Open World areas inclusive of NMs and HNMs in both areas.
In this way it's fair to Instanced lovers and Open World lovers but the latter would only receive lower grade quality gear or loot. Same time players can embark on their adventures while meeting the community in the open world and those who want instance action can queue in town.
Main thing is to prevent/discourage botters & hackers. I am sure Yoshi would want that.
I don't think anyone is under the impression that he plans to remove All open world content. The problem is he has publicly released plans to remove All Open World Dungeons. Things like Behest and Hamlet Defense(if it's actually open world), unfortunately, do not have anything to do with Adventure or Exploration.
We need places to wander through and find a sense of excitement. Instances do not provide this experience. They force you to move at someone else's pace and leave no time for self determined amusement or community interaction. Worse yet, they are highly single serving experiences. Instanced Dungeons are almost always designed with a single goal in mind. Once the player has completed it they have no need to return(unless there is a mechanic in game that forces them to repeated the same task over and over again). The Open world experience provides a sense of freedom required in an MMO to truly embody the spirit of exploration and adventure.

First of all. Did you guys all miss the information they released regarding Odin? Sounds like he's going to be some huge HNM running around that can be freely killed by anyone.
I'm ok with there being a few open world things but what is more fun about sitting in an camp out in the open trying to kill a HNM then doing it in an instance? I'm just curious. The fact that someone can come along and try to steal it from you? All the drama that occurred around HNM camps in FFXI was fun? I understand that it's nice to be able to go out and do things with all your friends. There will be opportunities for that if Odin is any indication.
Unfortunately for all the die hard old school FFXI fans that is not where MMOs are moving. The majority of the PAYING playerbase in these games are casual players who do not have the time to spend camping around the clock to enjoy their end game activities. Imagine if there were a large population of people playing this game now. Usually I'm able to grab a group and just do whatever in the strongholds but, if there were tons of people playing we'd be fighting over everything. I'm sorry but I don't find that enjoyable and I don't really know many people who do to be honest. Why does open world give you a greater sense of exploration and adventure then an instanced zone would? After you've been through the strongholds and figured out what to do is it any different then going into an instanced zone the third or 4th time?
Radav.. If that is true, why is WoW losing its players? Why did RIFT suck? Why did all those types of games losing interest now? BECAUSE PEOPLE WAN'T SOMETHING NEW! come on. I want square to be innovative on this game, but they are not.
What is innovative about having open world content be the norm vs. instanced content? Did you play Rift? I did, weren't all the rifts open world? People are leaving WoW because it's been around forever and people are finally getting bored of the same old WoW formula. People want something new that breaks the mold but, they're not going to play a game in large numbers... numbers that will make SE money if it caters to hardcore players. Instanced content can be innovative, devs are just too scared to break the mold because of the amount of money that's at stake. You can take an instance and make it innovative. I will be very disappointed if all get is some lousy tiered raid system like WoW just as much as the next guy.
