You know making us buy stuff with a achievement points is a better rewards system than just handing us free stuff at arbitrary subscription points. One encourages us to go out and play this game, to take on challenges we might otherwise ignore for the sake of achievement points and buying that next new shiny thing. The other just encourages us to buy time cards or subscriptions and keep paying even if we are not actually playing (because if you want that Squall costume you really shouldn't be taking breaks!).
This also benefits actual veterans in two ways 1) we don't have to buy any of the rewards we already earned under the old system and 2) we are going to be starting with more achievement points and be able to spend them on anything new they add instead. Those who've been around since 1.0 have all those no longer existing achievements granting them even more points than anyone who's come since. Seems better all around.
That really depends. The old system was kinda fair since everybody only had to sub to get it. How they played the game was of no concern. Now people have to do achievements to get them and I am not sure if that is great for those that dont care about it or simply have a different playstyle. Also lets be honest, imo most of the achievements are just boring grinds. So someone that would have gotten the reward by simply subbing to the game might now have to play parts of the game they dislike if they want the rewards. (This depends on the amount of points needed)You know making us buy stuff with a achievement points is a better rewards system than just handing us free stuff at arbitrary subscription points. Us veterans having more points is good for us (depending on what they will even do with the system) but is again bad for newer players. They will need to buy these achievements if they want it, which means that they will need even more points to get newer stuff. So the old system was imo fairer. Also you still need to sub since the costumes are still behind the veteran rewards and you need a subscription to play this game and earn points. So imo all that this changed, was to force people into doing achievements that they might not even like at all and still sub to get the costumes.
I would have simply halved the rewards (thus everything would have be gotten earlier) and left them all with the veteran rewards and introduce something new for the achievement points.
They could also do something interesting like allowing achievement coupons to be used in the mogstation, which would heavily incentivize people to play the game more so they can work towards whatever minions/etc they want from the shop
That's a pipe dream of course, especially when op's link has this
Neat! Wait...A phial of Fantasia has been added as a reward for the main scenario quest “The Ultimate Weapon.”
lol*Players who have already completed this quest are ineligible to receive a phial of Fantasia.
Fairness is a slippery argument. There will never be a solution that is 'fair' to everyone. Even halving the time required would have meant that there were still people who possibly would never get those rewards through possibly no fault of their own simply because FFXIV won't last forever (it would also mean that the first month you got two tiers of veteran rewards which would be hilarious). As for being 'forced' to do things, game already forces you to do things. How many minions/titles/glams are already locked behind achievements? How long of a grind were Anima weapons?
I understand where you're coming from and yes, I am slightly worried that the items themselves will cost far too many achievement points to be feasible for the average players to acquire all of them. It's a concern, especially if they'll add new things alongside the old things. But ultimately now they're rewards for playing the game, not just spending money on the game.
I wonder too if the veteran rewards system banking on FF nostalgia was losing traction with how many players are now coming in that hardly touched an FF game.
It came up in conversation how many players were confused by Omega's raids having such a bad story, only for it to be further noted that these same players didn't recognize any of the enemies from previous games. The was no real set-up in FFXIV to frame it. But, those of us who knew FFV were so blindsidedand gleeful by the boss remakes we didn't care.
In my personal opinion the veteran rewards were never something to brag about. I saw them as a thank you from the company that I support with my monthly payment, it probably would have been different if there's a actual specific benefit from it. For example, people that play for a year get 5% discounts on mog station purchases, since everything seem to end up in there anyways, or not even made available in game at all. So longer you play, more benefits you would get eventually.
But then we would have just like right now, the newer players complaining, since they just started they want the same benefits then long time supporters. We would be back at square one, hence I am saying, see it as thank you for supporting something you enjoy/love. Then it's less frustrating and aggravating when it's being taken away from you, or longer rewards are now given out in a shorter period of time.
Regardless if later down the line more items might get added, or the system gets suspended/retired all together, it won't have much impact of my like or dislike of the game, as well as on the decision if I keep subbing or not in the future, if that would become a question. To be honest I am kinda glad they give these rewards out sooner, I can imaging new players that are still fully hyped about the game getting these items, and then be happy for a while. For most of us veterans, we can't even appreciate something like that anymore lol.
Not a slap to me. I'm paying to play the game, not paying to get the veteran rewards. I also pay monthly, so I'm not bothered.

So now instead of just being subscribed for x amount of time players have to actually play the game, gather achievements to get items? it's so unfair to me that now I'll be super far ahead in achievement points vs those people who just started... not only will I have the veteran rewards already but a stock of points to spend on the new items.... what a slap in the face.... this is of course sarcasm... I mean c'mon rewards were a nice bonus but now people actually have to do stuff to EARN those same rewards... so if anything it's more of a slap in the face to new players than veterans
