When it comes to that large WoW playerbase, FFXIV is already in a pickle, because the most spread mentality (from review and word of mouth from people who played at launch) is that this game is a failure.

The major appeal for FFXIV is it's FF brand, there's only so much innovation can do at this point, especially taken into consideration it's damaged reputation. The only thing FFXIV has as an advantage over XI is it's youth. FFXI has been going on for almost 10 years successfully, but the graphics are getting old, the content is stretched, the gap between the average player and the newbie is too big and the playerbase is on the decline. This game also has promising potential. Aside from that FFXI is at advantage at mostly everything.

These players are going to want to play another MMO that gave them so many fond memories and moments, and if these are after the average western rpg setup then am sorry to say that the competition is fierce, there are better options. On top of that, the average Final Fantasy player is also a loyal player that will play for years to come given that this game succeeds and fulfills their needs.

2.0 is the the pinnacle that's going to define if this game will survive or not, I will not be as merciful then as I was at 1.19.

Ok that was a hell of a long text just to say give us FFXI-2 for the sake of nostalgia and safe bets on an existing player base. That being said. 2.0 is a relaunch, unlike anything other failed mmos did out there and it is the first launch on the PS3(not a relaunch as for PC) and if SE markets it right, then it will attract a big crowd of curious players.

Now if 2.0 meets all these player's expectations, meaning it fits 2011-12 mmo standards plus has something to offer more than the competition then it will have a successful launch and they can from there build a very large player base.

Going the lets re-enact FFXI with better graphics route, to please a small and ever diminishing player base is pure suicide.

FFXIV will not be able to pull the wow playerbase, maybe a fraction. The amount of WoW clones out there are many, and they are a lot better than this game in that field. This games reputation is broken, the game barely meets standards to be a functional MMO. Lets not kid ourselves here, like I said the only appeal this game has in the Final Fantasy brand, and building on just that is the only saving grace for this game. It should cultivate it's roots, try to make a FF game that plays like WoW and you have a failure.

You can blame FFXi all you want for not being as succesfull as WoW, but just because it was different and offered something that other MMOs did not is the reason to why that game has had a steady lifespan over all these years.

Of course I am not saying that this should be FFXI with updated graphics, what I'm saying on the other hand is stop trying to assimilate to other MMOs out there, but bear in mind the MMO identity that FFXI built and revolutionize it, because it's better to build on own success than try to copy everything else.

FFXIVs future rests on a thin thread, this might just as well be what decides it's fate.

You would really suck at business, plz don't take it bad. FFXIV did have a bad launch but publicly admitting their mistake, changing director and team, basically redoing the whole game (2.0, new engine, new maps, new story, new servers and many more) is giving them a new chance.

They are not simply patching a broken game but almost coming up with a new one. And reading comments from other websites after the announcement, i see that the majority are hopeful and interested in the 2.0 release. Also the PS3 version never came out, this will be the first time on PS3 and if the game is done right, then they have a huge playerbase of PS3 owners to tap in which WOW and other mmos do not have.

I played WOW for years and never found any other mmo that could match it, and i tried a lot of them. That being said, I'm sick and tired of WOW and i'm not the only one. WOW's numbers are shrinking... people grew out of it and are looking for something else. This is where SE can make their move, given that they succeed with 2.0. Final Fantasy is a brand new with millions of fans world wide, there is much potential from that if they come up with a FF MMo that will honor the legendary RPG brand name.

Now if we follow ur logic.... They should kill FFXI, which they want to keep running along side FFXIV btw. Reforge 2.0 to please that existing playerbase which is already giving SE money and admit defeat with FFXIV and hope that the FFXI vets will stay long enough for SE to cover for all the money they sinked into FFXIV thus far.... Great business plan right?
