The stakes are however failing at attaining that large WoW playerbase and losing it's niche. Most FFXI players who played at launch turned their backs pretty fast, they might give it another chance down the line when 2.0 comes out, but don't expect them to come running when FFXIV hasn't met their needs. When it comes to that large WoW playerbase, FFXIV is already in a pickle, because the most spread mentality (from review and word of mouth from people who played at launch) is that this game is a failure.

The major appeal for FFXIV is it's FF brand, there's only so much innovation can do at this point, especially taken into consideration it's damaged reputation. The only thing FFXIV has as an advantage over XI is it's youth. FFXI has been going on for almost 10 years successfully, but the graphics are getting old, the content is stretched, the gap between the average player and the newbie is too big and the playerbase is on the decline. This game also has promising potential. Aside from that FFXI is at advantage at mostly everything.

These players are going to want to play another MMO that gave them so many fond memories and moments, and if these are after the average western rpg setup then am sorry to say that the competition is fierce, there are better options. On top of that, the average Final Fantasy player is also a loyal player that will play for years to come given that this game succeeds and fulfills their needs.

2.0 is the the pinnacle that's going to define if this game will survive or not, I will not be as merciful then as I was at 1.19.
