Good! Can't wait to see how that pans out! Idk why it's so hard to make a hybrid horizontal/ vertical gear progression. To be fair...WoW gear actually DOES have effects like that, lol. IIRC, YoshiP said they were originally against ideas like gear set bonuses for XIV, but they've recently been reconsidering that stance (which makes me happy). Not sure if they're seriously committed to rolling that out this expansion, though, or if it's going to be a pet project for them to work on along with 5.0.
Would that even be plausible or work?!
gear set bonuses may be difficult because right now BiS lists are a mix of savage and creation tomestone gear. these bonuses would have to be pretty substantial to warrant collecting all pieces.
Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.
without even comparing gameplay or anything Vana'diel is a much better world than eorzea ever will be. simply because of things like this and how they made the world actually feel alive. the problem with eorzea as people have said quite frequently is its just so dead and bland. you never see that other group of people run past because you're the only people in "insert place here"One of the things that made FFXI's dungeon areas (not Dynamis) so deadly was the fact that not only was there trash, not only were there puzzles mixed in with all the bosses and ever changing zones - the areas were open world and the trash mobs were constantly respawning. Someone mentioned Sacrarium up thread with its moving walls. I recall being stuck in MSQ stuff in there and it was a painful slog because stuff kept respawning! And there were the equivalent of Hunts down there (they were called NMs or HNMs in XI) so occasionally you'd see a hunting party sneak by. And you'd see people farming gear and drops and all sorts of other stuff, because the zone was more than just a dungeon.
the zones are dead and bland as well. vanadiel had loads of little things that bought life to the zones. even little things like the garleige cidadel gate breach or the 3 mage gates in toramai canal. or the weighted gates in quicksand caves. all things that made the game world a little more interactive and interesting...
merchants stocks changed depending on conquest system and which nation controlled which area which was ever changing. whitegate continuously under attack defend the candescance. if lost go fight and get it back so players can use the runic portals again..... so many things bought the world to life...
eorzea by comparison is dead. done with the msq you basically never leave town unless ixion or maybe an s rank hunt is up......
fates are a joke they don't have any impact on the world and generally go totally ignored... oh hey bunch of monkeys attacking hyrstmil. stop them or let them run rampage it makes NO difference at all to the world.
the game would be so much better if Eorzea was actually alive and dynamic.
To be honest I don't know how gear set bonuses will work. because I kind of agree with you that the set bonuses will have to be substantial in order to warrant collecting all the pieces..
but at the same time they can't be that substantial because it'll give to big of an advantage over tomestone gear and alternatives and open a gap in the player base Yoshi is trying to close... however if the set bonuses are minor. players just wont bother and just mix match gear like they currently do.... especially when it'll still be replaced next patch anyway

I liked your post, and I just came off a year long binge of FFXI where I leveled various jobs to 99, got SMN decently gears (needs AF3 and Nirvana to go further), and completed all the missions. I will agree that with open dungeons, the prescence of dangerous mobs, and obstacles like the 3 Mage Gate, Vana'diel is more intricate than Eorzea, to a point. However, after you've been through those zones a few times, the novelty wears off and you barely notice it.
They had to strengthen the NPCs so that the Candy-dance wasn't always gone and so that the city-states in the Wings areas weren't always under beastmen control. Eorzea does need something to help bring things to life and get people out there.
Here's the problem with set pieces, we don't have skill trees. The reason WoW has them is that each class has 3 specializations; FFXIV eschews that design in favor of multiple classes serving the same roles. They would have to make one sets role based, and then offer bonuses based on your class, and then get people to have all classes in that role leveled. Even then, you run into a problem, because that gets the numbers crunching and the BiS going. I want more gear variety and armor like FFXI had, but I also understand that adds complications to the game and the devs have other things they want to focus on.To be honest I don't know how gear set bonuses will work. because I kind of agree with you that the set bonuses will have to be substantial in order to warrant collecting all the pieces..
Set bonuses could work without a skill tree by granting traits instead of skill bonuses. Here's the problem with set pieces, we don't have skill trees. Set enhances Intelligence (for casters)
Or
Grants a bonus to Direct Hit damage by 3%
Or
Enhances Spell Speed by 2%
Or
Increases Critcal hit damage by 4%
Or
Increases Healing Spells by 3%

Nothing too major, but add augmented random on gear to give variety or something to make gear pop!
You are older ... you've seen quite a bit in those 13 years. And it is likely you have become jaded when it comes to raiding, at least in FFXIV. If you've reached that time when it just isn't fun anymore, that's ok. Stay if you will, move on if you must. Be aware that you may have achieved a level of play that cannot be satisfied by any MMO out there these days.
Realize that there any number of folks who do not have your skills and experiences but are still experiencing the sense of fun that you think you're now missing.
I hope you find something to provide that sense of fun again.
