So why wasn't direct hit made a dps role stat?

When direct hit was announced it was said to be a dps only stat, the same way tenacity is tank only and piety is healer only.

But while having no direct hit on gear gives you a 0% direct hit rate, if tanks and healers do have direct hit on their gear, such as old gear or through melds, it does have an effect on them.

This has lead to a tiring debate on if tanks/healers should meld it or not and has lead to it being widely regarded as the must meld stat, making other melds obsolete.

Why was this done? why was direct hit not made a dps role stat as intended? Is it because direct hit replaced accuracy and the devs didn't feel like going back to all old tank and healer gear and changing it to something else?

Tenacity is still the best stat for your buck imo. At least up to a certain point. I run 1900 tenacity and 840 DH. Take less dmg than most and still put out 2.5-3k depending on how much I need to be in shield oath. Don't really care if I parse top 10 for tanks. I care that the bosses die. That's what matters

The issue is that not every tank thinks like you. Every tank that was willing to run with full STR jewelry (some still do I suppose) in the past will attempt to stack DH simply because it works and is so effective, while minimizing tenacity as an inferior dps option.

Doesn't bother me since I don't pug with tanks in content that needs vit jewelry, but when something can be abused someone will do it. Personally I was surprised when 4.0 dropped that only Piety/Tenacity were locked, when they called Direct Hit a DPS-only stat during the pre-SB live letters.

This is not true, by the way. I've gotten them before on my healer without any dhit on my gear.

Heals cannot direct hit though, which is honestly dumb IMO. Why are they able to crit but not dhit?

Because direct hit heals make no sense. No one is trying to avoid getting healed.
