I think the dragon's VOs are the same across them all IF they use the Dravanian language.

I've heard a few bad things around the German version being very crass and a bit unhinged. Lots of swearing for the sake of it, kind of thing.

I prefer English everything. I like to understand, but I also understand the issues with localizing foreign products as you can lose details and intent.

But, I'm probably the last person to talk to about "localization" since I was one of the few voices okay with Treehouse toning down the the R rated or higher junk in FEFates. Some of the cut content was disgusting.

Heh. When was the last time you saw an R rated movie?
To contribute: a lot of the loc dialog changes bug me, and it instantly took me out of it the first time I saw them write "words are wind" and other GRRM-isms. The worst thing for me though has always been the original ability name changes that they did in 2.0 (and a few in 3.0). They completely gutted FF references and job flavor by changing a lot of skill names and basically saw no benefit from doing so.

JP FEFates had a male character, Saizo, reacting to your avatar petting his face with the tone of being forced into physical assault against his will, only letting you do so because you are a royal, and not letting you would mean death. There is also another character, Zero (Niles in EN version), who asks avatar how they would react if he forced himself upon you right then and there.
It ain't subtle, and these moments are totally cut from the English version.
I think sexual assault references (threats, accusations) are perfectly kosher to put on the chopping block to keep the rating on teen. Neither character was changed otherwise. There are actually many lines in the petting minigame that are really sketchy ranging from the person being baffled and uncomfortable to liking it way too much.

I mean, just saying. It's a game about war. Referencing rape and atrocities but not depicting them is solidly in T territory. FFXIV does it all the time. (It's possible that these rapeferences are another Koji-Foxism)

Yeah. We got Meat Shield and Meat Axe instead of White Knight and Bloody Warrior, but then they chickened out when it came to Meat Sword. Thanks for the meme titles, Koji-Fox. They sure make me want to run content for the achievements! Americans hate cool titles. Now is the age of memes.

I am using German for the game and I am not really sure where it would be crass or unhinged. ö_ö And I also dont remember any unnecessary swearing.

Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.

It may just be a few cases then, as the specific quest I recall the complaint geared towards was in regards to the Bard quest including an NPC that's quite foul. Lol.

Maybe unhinged is the wrong word. More that the German version holds nothing back.

But a handful of quests does not mean lots of swearing ^^;. Also I am happy if we get it more direct. This means no misunderstanding thanks to talking through the flower and its kinda realistic with the rest of the game since they kind of have topics like rape and other horrible stuff in there. And its also realistic since some people in real life do have some foul language too thus it makes sense that those exit ingame too. If everyone would speak "nice" all the time, then this would just feel off.

Middy is a good example for misunderstanding: In the Japanese version it was kinda direct that he was simply testing us, while the English one sounded more like he was an enemy. (I cant remember the scene in German but I never got the feeling that he was an enemy so it might have been a bit more like the Japanese one)

No, in English he was just very vague with his motive. He did talk about the dragonsong war and about how Ishgard will burn, but he was otherwise neutral toward us (after finding out we were chosen by Hydaelyn).

But it seems that thanks to being more vague with his motive, that this created some believe that he might not be nice to us.

At least thats how I remember it here in the forum, when some where surprised that he was just simply testing us.

To be fair, I don't think he really liked us until near the end of the HW story (also, he did attack us on sight).
