[Spoilers, kind of] Characters who are completely different between JP/ENG

I play with FR voices even though I don't speak a word of it. One character with completely different interpretation in different VAs that comes to mind is Lakshmi. In French she sounds like an alluring temptress, while in English she sounds like a woman scorned. German Lakshmi sounds outright pissed off while the JP Lakshmi sounds like she's just rather be home watching soap operas on telly that deal with us. I was really surprised when I tried the English VA, since the dialogue text makes her sound much more gentle and like she's trying to persuade us, but then sounds like she's just angry at us. REST YOUR WEARY HEAD IN MY BOSOM OR GET SLAPPED, YOU LIL SHITES.

I also saw a video clip on YouTube with Yotsuju and was surprised how... mediocore she was in English. Normally I'm EN > every other language all the way, but in FFXIV since ARR launch I've kept FR voices just because they fit the characters as well as sound like the VAs can act, and not like they're reading from paper. (EN ARR Minfilia was bad enough to make me go through the different trailers to choose which language sounded the best to my ear).

We get it, some of you play the game with Japanese voice acting. I wonder how many of you actually understand it fluently, though, despite turning around and complaining about the English voice acting which has been of a consistently high quality ever since Heavensward. It's fine to have personal tastes, but it does the game and the English speaking community a major disservice to act like the English translation is poor and/or badly voiced.

Lakshmi probably varies the most across languages as far as tone goes. In English(and some others I think), her tone fits the circumstances under which she was summoned, similar to the HM Titan summoned in HW. In JP, French, and others her tone fits the seductress theme her dialogue has.

I recommend if you are starting a alt switch it from ENG to JPN and you'll see a whole lot of differences in ARR & HW which are awesome

My first language is French and I play the game in English. Every time I set the game in French I just cringe so hard I have to set it back to English.

And he sound much younger,, shaving some more credibility. They don't use any of "old" French like they do in English, it just sound so boring.

since koji fox is a main lore person and the head of na localization he changes things based on his own ideas/target audience.

Pretty sure this stopped being the case around 2.55-HW. Localisation teams now have to get the okay (though probably only for MSQ and side-quests).

Well considering she was summoned under certain circumstances, it makes sense for her to sound scorned and angry. Personalities of a Primal all depend on the summoners mental state (in this case, a mother who is grieving and scorns the legged race. Also Lakshmi warned us to leave her people alone... and then we ignore her and enter her arena).
