As for the resolution, it is always best to work in print resolution, i usually always have my images 20 inch high or wide at 300 DPI.
I would not rely on textures, blending textures usually always look flat.
If you want to have some texture effects its best to work with custom brushes.
Everyone works differently, painting a lot you will find your own routine and style,
it is just a matter of practice
