In my Impression DA was never much of a site that is focusing on practice, development but rather a place where people simply present their artworks. If you are after progress then a smaller art community will do better.
i am running one, feel free to check it out, lots of nice and friendly artists there and talent. There is art database with tutorial videos, demos and so on... And there are monthly study activities, challenges...

As for the custom brushes, you can make your own easily, google for some custom brush tutorial of PS.
I would not rely on them however, i hardly use any at all.

Everyone here has inspired me to pick up the Intuos 4 and try again! ^^

Last night I started on a picture of a FF14 friend. It's only lines so far, but I'll practice cleaning it up and coloring next.

Since we can't post images it's a link to my Lodestone blog.
(Sorry it's in Japanese this time -- I usually do bilingual posts, but I was feeling lazy this morning).

I think Randis is right -- it will just take getting used to the disconnect between tablet and monitor, but there are definitely benefits to going digital for artwork.
One very nice thing I've noticed so far -- it's great being able to erase so cleanly on a digital canvas! ^^

I usually use Photoshop for imaging, but for drawing I'm trying to use Paint Tool SAI which has some very nice features -- especially being able to rotate the canvas more freely than in Photoshop.

i also recommend the app Open Canvas 1, the 1.1 version is old but its free and has cool features such as canvas rotation in real time, network paint mode, painting progress recoding and its less than 1 mb in size. It lacks all sorts of adjustment features and is only good for painting practice.

    I'll check it up.
I was using DA because many people also upload their tutorials, and many of these have come in handy to me.

On a side note, though... your pieces are really nice. did you take any professional classes (college, private art classes, etc.)?

    @ Shelia

I have seen it, but your thread is about FF fanart, this one is focused on the artists and does not have to be FF related at all. I much love to see original work.
I did not study art but i learned some things from some other artists when i was young, later when i started working for Game Studios and publishers i leaned a great deal more and widened my service to 3D, art direction, animation , SFX, composting and cut, Photography.
