Storage wouldn't be so much of an issue if items from past xpacs were made largely irrelevant, but they sadly aren't.

The new goldsmithing metals require a number of ores from ARR (including copper ore), ALCs need mats from HW for SB recipes, and don't even get me STARTED on what CUL players have to suffer through.

I can appreciate that they make older gatherables valuable in this fashion, meaning that someone leveling botany can gather HW mats that are used for level 65 reisuis in ALC, but at the same time, this whole situation necessitates more storage.

Otherwise, you're going to find yourself constantly selling and rebuying/harvesting mats you NEED for your 65+ recipes.

I'm pretty sure the problem with just adding more retainers isn't about losing players paying for them, it's about server and bandwidth needs.

Yet they magically have space for everyone to theoretically rent 6 extra retainers...

Has nothing to do with limitations or bandwidth or whatever.
they're nickel and diming us and it's
unacceptable with this games payment model.
suddenly you can get x retainers if you pay for them!
no one likes f2p buy more baggage space so why do it here in p2p. this is why ib can't be fooked with crafting myself, especially cooking which I really want to do.

I appreciate the frustration.. but as has been said before very few people use the retainer "rent" system. Giving people a free extra one GUARANTEES all existing characters are going to use those resources. If absolutely everyone rented all 6 slots, I'm sure there'd be more servers and bandwidth purchased to accommodate them as they grew.. but this is increasing resource use without any additional revenue to support it. Very different case.

This is the only MMO I've ever played - especially a p2p one - that rents inventory space. It's unacceptable.

I hear that a lot from people who dislike the way this was implemented. Your position is valid of course.
I dont see it the way you do I suppose. I got along all the way to 4.0 with the base retainers even though I'm a bit of a packrat. I got all my crafters to 60 and do tend to collect glamours.
I am feeling the crunch, and now i pay for 2 extra retainers because I feel it's less trouble to pay than to manage my inventory as tightly as I used to.. but it is doable. It's just not worth the trouble VS the money to me.
What is unacceptable to you is just another thing I'm willing to throw money at to make it go away. here's to hoping we all get another retainer to help everyone.

So there'd be more servers and bandwidth to accommodate for something they should already have enough servers and bandwidth for anyway....right....

I'd appreciate more actual discussion and less flippant dismissal. I'm not saying it would magically appear. people would pay money, that money could be used to pay for those things as demand obviously increased.
Whether or not they should already have these things is a matter of opinion. In a perfect world a game provider would be able to potentially handle their servers being used at max capacity constantly forever. This is not how they are run. As demand increases, adjustments are made. Nobody would lock up the capital necessary to max out all possible eventualities, you'd make your investors pull out instantly. You run it as cheaply as you can at a reasonable level of service, maximizing profits and minimizing customer disappointment.

Definitely one more per expansion would be appropriate. Even by a bloated estimate a retainer could fit inside 128KB of space. Hell, what do you want to bet they already preallocate enough for eight retainers for every character as soon as it's made anyway?

I'd support this mainly because this would be the easiest means of inventory expansion rather than trying to stress servers increasing bag space.

And there's another thing I don't get. Why on earth are they having us download the entire item list every time we zone? It isn't needed. Do it once on login, then have the client keep track on its own via the acks from the server we already receive when something is used/tossed/traded/sold. The checks for whether you have the item are already happening on the server, so it's not like you have to worry about someone diddling their memory to try and use something multiple times(and even if they were that would be happening completely independently of zoning list downloads).

As a crafter/gatherer/likes glaming I run out of inventory space on my retainers too. Have maxed amount and wouldnt mind 1 more
