Mob mounts. Do you want them? (Poll)

To be honest being "Magically" brought to life could also be as "Magical" as the Mako Cannon in FFVII they are pretty much machines powered by "Magic" Both Cait Sith and his Moogles are robots of some sort.

FFXIV is currently rooted in a rather "Serious/fantasy realism" just mounting the monsters as they are seems rather silly and I feel they would have a hard time explaining it away in lore.

A fair point, but I feel like taking everything too seriously will only stifle the game's evolution in the long run. I personally like big serious plots and worlds, but we could use a few "just for fun" additions here and there, too. FFXIV needs to break a few boundaries on "realism" in order to create some new interest.

Here's a potential lore idea that I'll throw out there to justify these mounts, though. Again, just from the top of my head as an example. A possibility could be raising a wild creature from birth or a young age, and thus tempering its feral nature. A whole quest line can even come out of a concept like that. SE is likely coming up with their own lore ideas to work with though, if they plan on doing this at all.

Does anyone have screen-shots of the new potential mounts? I'd like another look at them. I remember the Goobbue looking quite silly, and I remember the Drake, but I don't remember getting as good look at the third.

well thats just an artwork? its a comic type of character and not a serious one. or you love to see cloud riding on a huge moogle guy (for example)?

A Machine Mount and a dragon to ride on which we can saw in the pictures from the live letter would have been OK (not more than ok). but a gobbue? seariously that looks awkward to all character types. a gobbue doesnt seem like that you can ride on it just standing there on his head. i think its inappropriate

well then i want to ride on a morbolus, too. XXXD would be also kind of strange. not every monster fits the role of being a silly mount.


and i think a gobbue has always been a "special" monster type. with making a mount out of it.. it loses the impression of being special. really. every dumb will ride on a gobbue.


i imagine how it will look like.. standing a gobbue next to a chocobo, a dragon, a tiger, an evil eye ...it will look like they are riding on freaking Pokemons or like players opening a zoo.. i dont like that kind of idea. chocobos will lose heavily of importance as well.


but if you want kind of zoo/pokemon atmosphere (welcome to kitty online), because you want mounts like gobbue, evil eye and so on.. although it makes no sense at all .then here you go. . i mean there is maybe a "cool" feeling.. but this effect wears of after a couple of weeks. i think it destroys the atmosphere in the end.
but people seem to be happy with this. final fantasy is not a standard MMO in many kinds.. the gameplay, the setting, global mmo... so why you want to make an "every kind" of MMorpg out of it?

i mean housing etc are really different things. and a machine mount for example would be OK.. we have seen in many other FF's before like in FF12 when fran rides an aero bike.

Also, that was exactly my point, it isn't a serious character, and yet it has a whole lot to do with the main serious plot of FFVII. Sillyness and comedy is part of the Final Fantasy genre too, and FFXIV should be no exception.

But you're right, let's halt all production because you personally think big machines are cooler than big monsters when it comes to mounts. Not everyone thinks they look dumb. In fact, a lot of people love the idea. Don't throw a wrench into other people's fun just because of your personal tastes.

Okay, so Yoshi has tentatively put forward 3 possible limited edition 1 time only mounts. He's even said he's not sure about using those three, so it's clear that he's being selective and careful about what he chooses to be a mount. Considering this, he's not going to just start making anything and everything mounts willy nilly, nor will we have hundreds of mounts, so I don't understand how people are getting this.

People are taking this tentative look at a few distinct mounts and translating it as "omg I don't want hundreds of mounts I can't believe he's doing this." That's drastically jumping to conclusions. Yoshi's smarter than this, and it's clear from the live letter alone that he's considering mounts carefully.

In short, don't argue extremely unlikely and far off scenarios to try and make your case. It's not WoW (or Pokemon), it's Final Fantasy.

Yeah, housing is different, but I used it as an example because it shares a common element. It's something that isn't required to be in FFXIV, but it's something that most people would like to have. This was made counter to your argument that we shouldn't have mob mounts because we "don't need it."

Would you have declared that game to be not Final Fantasy because they made Magitek mounts, something never before seen in Final Fantasy and wasn't even a chocobo? Ridiculous, right? Totally not Final Fantasy. Well, it made its home in Final Fantasy as one of the most popular additions in the franchise, and continues to be something that players fondly look back on.

This can only ever happen if SE pushes the boundaries to create NEW elements. We can't keep dwelling in the old, because Final Fantasy is constantly evolving with new ideas.

Rather than multiple mounts I'd rather it be different color Chocobos,where having a certain color Chocobo will offer a different trait. One's faster, one offers more damage when fighting on it. Etc.

I don't mind if it's like the Beast Master class that get's different mounts because that's in their nature to tame and control. So it's not really odd to see them riding a dragon because that's their job description.

I'm a big fan of lore, and currently there's nothing in the lore that directly contradicts mounts existing. Mobs are aggressive? Yeah, using them as mounts are also more than a year away. There's a million plausible things SE can write up for game lore in the meantime in order to introduce these effectively.

In the same way, Cait Sith would be a "lore breaking character" if it wasn't for the lore that was written for him in order to make it work.
