Seems Like Jobs Have Two Classes Tied To Them Skill Wise.

Yoshida Naoki: The requirement to get these jobs is to do a job quest, but to do a job quest, there is a special requirement too. If you want to become a paladin, you need to have a class level 30 of gladiator and 15 of marauder. Then you can apply to this job quest and then, if you complete it, you can unlock that job, so it is not really like combining classes. It is more like a requirement.

For example, paladin will be a really special job for tanking. To make sure that he gets those abilities, he will need do more different quests to get those abilities. You are going to protect others, but that’s not all. You have the marauder as a background class before you become a paladin. Those kind of class abilities will be connected to the paladin job. Even if you had more classes in the past, these are not related to the paladin and can’t be used.
Seems like Paladin has access to Gladiator and Marauder skills. Marauder skills are related to paladin and can be uses, but other skills from other classes cant.

If thats the case, can we equip most marauder skills on Paladin?

Will Marauder be able to equip paladin?

It is also interesting to think of other jobs in this way. Will Black Mage be able to use cure spells from conjurer since Thaumaturge 30, and Conjurer 15 might be the requirement?

Or can Black Mage be equipped on Conjurer as well?

    hmmmmmmm.

Without trying to sound too fresh, this is old news.

    1 class > 1 job

requirement for unlocking job = 2 classes (2:1 ratio of level's it appears)

edit: and yeah it was just an example... who knows, wait and see.

Example given was Level 30 in the main class and level 15 is the "sub" class to start the quest to open the job.

You've always been able to use cross-class abilities. Just because you equip a job doesn't mean you will lose this option, it will just be limited a bit.

As a PLD, you'll still be able to make great use of any other skills you've acquired (those form MRD and PGL being the most helpful to a tanking class) - but there will be some offensive abilities and powerhouse weaponskills that you'll lose access to as a result, regardless of their classes of origin.

I think you're highly optimistic about this, but that could be the pessimist in me. I think you're more or less going to be locked into Gladiator abilities as Paladin, and then you'll be able to quest the JOB defining abilities. Guess we'll have to wait for Yoshida's official post about job changes.

I don't know if you ever played Final Fantasy Tactics, but the job system works similar in regards to it.

(Only as example, I can't remember combinations in FFT)

Lets say you got Thief's class level to 4, and Monk's to 3, when you did this, you have lets say the Samurai job available. The Samurai is a completely different job in all it's own.

FFXIV is working the same way. You level GLA to 30 and MRD to 15, and you unlock the Paladin. I believe the difference this time is that it derives from a CLASS and enhances it. GLA right now is a tanking class, with flexibility of other classes. Paladin will enhance your ability to tank, at the cost of using abilities of other classes.

How abilities are distributed in JOBs are still unknown, but that is the general look at requirements right now.

Really hope that jobs dont lock out cross class abilities from other classes.

EG: If a paladin can ONLY use abilities from GLA and MRD, that would be lame.

JOBs do lock out abilities from other classes, that is the point. Point is to have a class excel at a certain aspect at the cost of not being able to utilize other roles. Paladin will have its own abilities with the possibility of getting traits from GLA and MRD. We don't know the full details yet, but that is how it looks so far.
