Instead of trying to overhaul the entire armory crate, there IS another option:

Filter Buttons.

Put a row of small buttons on the bottom of the Armory Crate UI that filters by types:

Tank/Melee/Physical Ranged/Caster/Healer/DoH/DoL

Checking one or more of these buttons makes everything that can't be worn by the one(s) you have turned on disappear.

Heck, just the ability to have /itemsearch highlight the searched items and allow for multiple keywords, or search strings of more than one word in length, would go a long ways. Plenty of very easy improvements still available.
