    FFVII eh?..

To me, everything FFV, FFIX and FFXI was defines what a Final Fantasy game is to me.

Edit: I'll answer my own questions to start.

    1. Epicness. Both in story and in gameplay. FF in general has always managed to take even simple things and make them larger than life.

    2. Awesome story. FF stories are always just a little different and told so well. Fantasy stories are common, but the flare FF manages to tell them with is not.

    3. Cutting edge CGI. They always seem to be "first" in graphics.

    4. Interesting game mechanics. Somehow, they always manage to pull something off thats just a little different.

    5. Plenty to do. They seem to be a master of mini games, side stories, and optional bosses and quests.

    6. Really cool weapons and armor/clothing designs. Simple yet very distinct.

    7. Certain running themes. Chocobos, Cid, airships, summons, limit breaks, or the equivalents of such.
Are you asking me what makes a good "Final Fantasy Game" or what makes a good "Final Fantasy MMO"?

These are two completely different topics. A lot of people want SE to use elements from offline games which is very hard to incorporate. Can they use names and appearances? Yes. Can they adopt a feature from any FF titles armory system or leveling system? No. They have to stick with the few main features that make an mmo an mmo and the features that make an mmo successful.

Hence why all the good MMOs are consisted of Party Play, Grind, The standard leveling system, Meriting system, quests relating to kill this kill that, world bosses, raids, reasonable travel methods, CLIENT SIDE GAMEPLAY, PvP, content and an armory system that actualy makes sense and doesn't create unbalance.

FF11 - WoW - Aion - TERA - L2 - Ect. They should have taken elements from all of these games. Not pull random nonsense out of a void.

In Advent Children Cloud does indeed love Tifa, but he is dying at the beginning of the movie. He doesn't want to get too close, because he knows when he dies it will crush her and that he had already hurt the people he cared most about, time and time again. Cloud believes that keeping those away he cares about, (Tifa and Marlene and Denzel/Denzo, whatever his name is) will somehow keep them from getting hurt. If you watch the end of the movie, when he is cured and no longer dying, he is way more caring towards not only Tifa, but everyone.
And that is what makes a great Final Fantasy;:
    1) The awesome story lines
    2) Unforgettable characters - (Cloud/Tifa, Squall/Rinoa, Tidus/Yuna, Kain/Cecil/Rosa) nobody forgets these caracters. It's usually a strong male character that is emotionally unstable, and the woman he loves - the one that holds him together. Now I am not one to get all lovey dovey, but love is a poweful emotion, and Square and later on, SE, uses this emotion to make great games and great stories. Even the supporting character are usually fantasitic.
    3) Fun - Other than FF9, I have had a blast playing every Final Fantasy game I have played. I didn't hate FF9, I just feel it's the weakest of all the FFs.
    4) Innovative additions to each game - Materia, juction system, summoning, Limit breaks, etc. They always seem to add the right additions to make each FF have a unique feeling.
    5) Perfect Blend of technology and setting - One game you'll be an old school knight defying your king, the next game you'll be in futuristic setting living in floating cities, and then the next game you'll be in a land where a Nemesis destroys your home if you use a technology. Great stuff.

I love you forever for this. This is quite possibly the greatest reason for keeping FFXIV alive.

Now you guys need to do something with the Baccano intro.

I am asking you what makes a Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy in your eyes. I'm not asking what an MMO is to you. Not that the subject couldn't be a thread in of itself. I do personally think many of the MMO "genre" have limited their imagination. As far as I know, there are no rules on what an MMO is, outside of being massive multi-played, and having RPG elements. But on the other hand, there are certain defining characteristics of a Final Fantasy title.

Yes, there are certain things that cannot translate from console to MMO. I think most would not expect it to. But the armory and leveling system? Not exactly like the console... but a fashion of it, yes it could. Many Final Fantasies have an unlock system of abilities that add magics and strengths over time. This isn't much different than WoW's talent trees, and actually, the idea isn't much different from the physical attribute points they have now, it's just more elaborate. The metaria system is also something that could be modified to work. Having weapons with slots that let us use certain abilities. I'm not saying they need to do this with FFXIV (would take too much rewriting), but it only needs a little imagination to work in an MMO.

Armories could certainly have special attributes to them such as resistances and adding strength and magic, much like the console games do. Making your dps higher might seem like the obvious choice, but hey, what if that boss deals Pain like in the console game? Pain dampener ring might look good. Yes, I could forsee some problems if they did it exactly like console, but it doesn't mean the idea isn't a valid one to consider and work around. Many, many bosses in MMO's are about specific mechanics.

In any case, as I stated in another thread, FFXIV doesn't need to be like any other MMO. It just needs to be a Final Fantasy. Many have posted in this thread what they love about Final Fantasy. I have enjoyed reading the posts and I agree with much of them. FFXIV has delivered on some of it, but fallen seriously short in a lot of areas.

However, this thread isn't about exploring where it went wrong, but what Final Fantasy has gotten right. To express what has brought us back to Final Fantasy time and again. And, hopefully, will bring us to FFXIV time and again when the devs are able to incorporate these things they seemingly had forgotten first time around.
