Positional only affect Kenki gain, and are thus not a high priority. Damage wise SAM only cares about if the target is in range and if he is buffed up and slash debuff applied. So it is the least positional dependent class, and the best melee DPS to pick for those who hate positionals.
SAM also has higher uptime then the other melee DPS due to its high mobility so its lays out a consistent high level of damage output throughout the fight. It is the metaphorical black mage of melee DPS. Which attracts a lot of people to the class.
I have a few issues with SAM but mostly I enjoy it, I may be wrong, or just need to continue to LTP the SAM, but I feel the rotation is very slow which get interrupted quite often especially in fights like Susano....its pretty hard to lay down DPS when every half second you have to break off and run for your life...I lose my place in the rotation and find myself having to start the rotation over and over
And then there's the feeling like, after I rotate fully and drop a 17k crit, that I'm singled out and targeted by the boss because of the DPS...which either gets me killed or stuck out to far away trying to avoid AOE to keep the DPS up to par...
Like I said, I'm still working on it....
The thing that changed for me on lv 62 is purely the kenki gain you suddenly get from the trait. With the amount of kenki your weaponskills, all of them now, generate, you can do a lot of Hassatsu: Shintens (the oGCD single target attack costing 25 kenki). Suddenly combat becomes a lot faster at that particular level. Incidentely you also happen to get said Shinten at lv 62.![]()

It does indirectly have a huge impact on your damage, as that means having more kenki for extra Hissatsu: Shinten. It is a high priority, even if it does not affect the potency of your attack.Positional only affect Kenki gain, and are thus not a high priority. That is true when it comes to harder content like EX primals and savage raids where you need to optimize to beat the enrage clock.
But for general content? Its not a high priority.
Still, that doesn't mean you should go out of your way to be lazy and ignore the positionals entirely. It's not like you have to keep dancing around the boss like MNK does or anything, so getting those positionals isn't exactly high effort to begin with.
It just makes it less punishing for you if you can't get into the correct position because you need to move.
OP. If the class doesn't sing to you. Then well, find something that does? You don't have to see the hype or feel it, you don't need to play it just because it's the super-fav of now. You can find something else. No need to torture yourself over it.
