I think, the surname should be something that's obtained at rank 50, that was the one decent thing about Warhammer online, the surname, if chosen to get one, was only obtainable at a certain level. Just my two cents.

The /tell function would most definitely be more fluid if a {/search all} function is implemented.
I'm not against surnames but I'm not for them either. All I ask is that if they are changed, let us change our actual name. My name is The Dubont. I don't want my name stuck as The for the rest of the game...
I agree Belgian!

Oh, Belgian, you so silly! =P
The 'official' reason was so that FFXI players could safely bring their character names to FFXIV and not have to worry about them being taken.

I like having a last name. All my characters end up having one when I write their histories.Tanaka: It hasn't been confirmed yet, but we would like to give incentives to the players. First of all, FFXI has 32 worlds, and they may have the same name across different worlds, as I'm sure you know. Each name in each world has to be a unique; there can't be conflicts with other players. However, when we have FFXIV, we still don't know how many worlds there's going to be yet, but players might have the same name if they all move to the same world, so there may be conflicts. So, to avoid that, what we're trying to do is add a surname to their name, so players can keep their main name, but they can add something else to their surname - that way players with overlapping names can keep their names from FFXI, but they can add something on to it to make it unique.
But I'll agree they're not convenient to type. SE promised once upon a time to somehow make that easier...

one name or two names...
Not sure what is more cool
one name: OOOsephirhothOOO
or
2 names: Sephiroth Cloud
We totally need to able to use all the special characters then we could have cool names like:
/////::Sephirhoth::\\\\\
or 3 names:
Sephiroth Cloud Supersayajin
Humm, tough choice!

o.o you joking right? So if someone else had Zenaku i can't pick it and my friends are in that world so i have to go and pick other name hell no o.o Surnames allow me to have my name i don't mind the last name part.
not a big fan of surname system they've implemented, but making names become easier that people creating a new character don't need to see this... "Name not available" message.![]()
I cant say i dislike the Surname system, i think i like it.You can indeed keep your main name you used for years even if someone else has it too. As for Belgianrofl's post, Even without surname system, ppl can still name their Char kiklokikopikolikoplokiko or sghftneaudikfn or other names you still wont be able to write down to talk to them. (Tho i dont understand why you would want to talk to ppl with such names rly) As for text adventure in crowded zones, that also occures in non surname games. Everywhere there is crowd, even if surnames werent there, the situation would be the same. and as for the line where those who support the surnames system their names are gay, it still has nothing to do with the surname system, but with the imagination ppl have.
