Bahamut was originally a space whale believed to carry the world on its back, so it's not as though taking creative liberties with the characters/monsters they name after mythological beings after is new.

This is a common theme in FF games. XI was especially guilty of taking mythological creature names and affixing them to whatever species loosely fit it. So it's no surprise that XIV does the same thing.

He was actually a giant fish, not a whale (whales are mammals after all ), but yes, he was from Arabian mythology (Kujata is from the same myth). And to be fair to SE, Bahamut being portrayed as a dragon was not even SE's idea, as it was Gary Gygax of Dungeons and Dragons fame who originally attached Bahamut's name to a dragon (Square borrowed a lot of things from DnD in the original FF game).

And as someone else mentioned, the FF series has a tradition of taking ideas, concepts and names from real world history, mythology, legend and pop culture and adapting them, so this is hardly unusual.
