I think the issue with people liking it and not liking it is the confusion of what it will look like, so here is a piccie!

Contexxxt ;~;
A sea of rainbow colored chocobos looks ridiculous, but XI had color breeding;
A flood of skeletons waiting for Dynamis looked stupid, but Alchemist made costume meds;
So SOMETIMES the ride to camp looked like the gay pride parade crashed into a hen-house...
So SOMETIMES a linkshell looked less than professional...
That's okay in some doses! Over time, these will take on a different meaning and I look forward to that time.
Are you saying a sea of goobbue mounts would look any different than a town full of pumpkin heads on a scale of one to ridiculous? How about six months after Halloween? {scans the forum avatars}

^^^ This is the exact thing I'm worried about. ^^^
It seems that too many people can't see past their own character to focus on the big picture. They think "OMG how l33t will I look riding a Goobbue/Ahriman/Drake/etc..", but never consider how silly it will look when everyone else is doing it too.
Of course, its just a reward for current players, right? Well, once that door is open, we will see players clamoring for mounts of every shape and size. It's a bad road to go down.
Every addition in an MMO needs to be multiplied by 100x to get an idea of how it will appear and affect the game.
The proper thing to do is to implement this mount system as part of a Beastmaster Taming ability. If high-level BST could tame and ride mobs like that into battle, It would give the mounts a purpose as well as integrate them better into the world.

I think there's a black and white to what you and I are foreseeing. I'm far too focused on how much a sentiment like this would mean to me in a few years, and you're far too focused on how silly the sentiment will be when it happens. But far too many threads are derailed by polarizing people like that - I'd kinda like to throw both of those out the window and just focus on the gray area in-between.
For the majority of the game, they won't be super rare or super common, they'll just be. I don't think that breaks anything, and I definitely don't think it moves the game towards being "not Final Fantasy because it's too similar to any other MMO" just because every now and then you go, "Ohey, that guy's riding an Umbral Era drake..."
