FFV is HUGELY popular and important in Japan. It's basically the reason we have the Job System we do in many of the games. Yeah, FF3 invented it but FF5 perfected it. There are also references to Final Fantasy V all over FFXIV. Hell - Krile is literally named after one of the main characters from Final Fantasy V.

The Genji Armor is the strongest armor in FFV, it is also the single most ICONIC armor from that game because it has been used in almost every single game since then in some form - usually represented by the Genji Gloves.

Genji Armor isn't even originally from FFV, and besides that the FF games have never made a huge deal about equipment anyway outside of weapons like Excalibur and Ultima. I don't think anyone's going to lose their mind over their favorite armor set from FFII making it into the game, especially when none of the gear has a canonical design anyway, they're just stats on a menu.
