Or just, play tanks to be tanks, and not have huge amounts of DPS?

There's nothing intrinsically wrong with wanting to do a decent amount of damage as a tank. I don't think anyone here is asking to do as much or more damage than a DPS. (awful DPS notwithstanding, of course)
