Well, take a look at a site like GamerEscape, formally Eorzeapedia. Back in their FFXIClopedia days, they were one of the hottest Final Fantasy communities out there. They were just known as "The Wiki."

Now they're ghost town and charges for FFXIV haven't even started yet. How are they supposed to maintain a wiki site without a community to back them up?

It isn't just the leaders that are important, it's the participation of those going to the site that keep it alive. It creates the environment for creativity and engagement. If you want to keep FFXIV alive you have to think about keeping this part of it alive as well.

I don't know what the future holds for opportunities to do that, but thinking about isolating people out of game is the wrong attitude. It's in your own interest, if you really want FFXIV to succeed, is to find ways to cultivate the community. If nothing else, I hope you can see the logic of that.
