No, that would mean I wouldn't be able to glamour it until I'm willing to part with it. Glamour log doesn't have to destroy the item.

IMO anything that lands in your inventory should auto-save in the glamour log (or if we want to be really picky, so long as it is soulbound). The player can then get rid of the item how they wish, or save it for use as actual gear on future alt classes if they'd like.

The problem I suspect is that this would inevitably let people access outfits they've never actually seen, or clone gear that they never had.

From a data point of view, a table of "player has X" is much smaller than "player has X gear, it's stats are (250 different points of data)", so either the item needs to be destroyed when "logged", or the mechanism has to require the item to be removed from players inventory to a different kind of inventory that only cares about the item name and color (thus deleting durability, soulbinding, materia, etc.) If you haven't leveled up all your classes/jobs to where you want them, a lot of that gear has to stick around and take up space.

Like another way SE could solve this is by creating a glamour closet as I said before, but instead bind the entire outfit as a glamour together together with the primary hand gear. That way the closet will have a list of outfits by class that they can use or re-bind to newer primary hand gear, and the actual gear the player has for that job becomes less important.

But ultimately the concern is storage/networkbandwidth and the way you avoid both is by making the data not change nearly as often. I imagine that every outfit combination that players have "exists" in the field server's memory, and are written to disk every few seconds. Glamours actually make it safer to not keep this information in memory since the player is less likely to want to keep ugly gear around for Galmour purpose and can dispose of those, thus freeing up that network bandwidth in the inventory.

There is nothing stopping SE from having unlimited inventory space, it's the network bandwidth. If you have 100 item slots and each slot took 8 bytes, that's 800 bytes that fit inside the packet, but if they decide to have 10,000 item spaces, that is 80KB that needs to be transferred every second the item window is open. Consider that players may only have 512Kb of upstream bandwidth, that is only 64KB that can be pushed every second. So while the inventory window is open, such a player would not be able to play the game at all if a 10,000 item inventory was available. Now consider that connections are measured in megabits or gigabits, and you can see how doubling the inventory, halves the number of players that can be on a server. At least if it's core inventory.

That doesn't make sense at all. It's how the systems work in other MMOs. If you get a piece of gear, it unlocks the appearance.

If you refund the item, you also lose the appearance, at least in WoW.

That's only if you buy something and return it to a vendor for a "full refund". You can still vendor or disenchant the item after you unlock the appearance without losing the saved appearance.

This. There's no need for an ultimatum here.

As soon as you spirit-bind the item in any way, it's added to the glamour.

If you have an item you've not yet spirit-bound and do not yet have in your glamour log, you can right-click on it and select "add appearance". You will be given a warning saying "To add this item's appearance to your glamour log, you must bind it to you. Do you want to spirit-bind this item now?"

Done. No buy, add, refund exploits, but otherwise purely automatic.

(Like in every other MMO that has a glamour log.)

Also the damn mog station states that you can have 4 retainers for free (or 1$ activation fee) 2 you get ingame and 2 additional for no fee. I have even sent their support team 3 mails that have pointed out the faulty information on the mogstation and nothing have been done about it... All they have to do is to remove 1 word at the table which very clearly states.

    "Number of Additional Retainers"
    "1: No additional fee"
    "2: No additional fee"

Remove additional from the title and the problem is gone.
