Why isn't the Shire Shield in the token exchange? Also, why no token returns?

that's a great idea but I see why they didn't think of it before, ninja weapons are just 1 item that uses only 1 slot while pld is literally 2 items. I think they'd have to get rid of the conjurer/thaumaturge shields to implement that. Who knows, there's hope for 4.0 lol

It is very unlikely that a change like this will be in 4.0 - they would have said something about it by now, if there were.

That said, this may be something they're working toward. It's been many years since a shield equipable by THM or CNJ has been added to the game, and a lot of the one-handed weapons for those jobs have had two-handed equivalents introduced. If they can first phase out shield for those jobs, they can work on fusing GLD/PLD swords and shields into a single-slot sword-and-board item. At that point, the only purpose for the off-hand slot will be for crafters and gatherers.

Even so, this change may never happen. Off-hand shields were a remnant from 1.0, when there was a lot more freedom as far as what classes could equip what items. It's been an albatross around the devs' necks practically from the inception of ARR, and they've had to jump through a lot of hoops to deal with it - and some of those jumps have been pretty awkward, resulting in awkwardness like being able to upgrade sword separate from shield for certain stages of the original Relic weapon. Unfortunately, to combine them now means that they'll need to go back and deal with all of those workarounds again, to account for the fact that now only one item is involved instead of two.

The loss of glamour options is a shame, but I have the feeling it's a low-priority concern on the devs' part. The existing infrastructure is almost certainly the big issue, here.

I'm going to chime in on this to add a suggestion. Why don't they just do what Tera and a few other mmo's have done? Just allow pld to buy the sword and shield as a set. Nin already gets two weapons as a set, I don't see why pld can't be the same way.

I dont understand what the issue is with buying shield and sword seperate? If anything paladins are benefitting from that - both when it comes to glamour and stats. I cant see any negative impact on a paladin for having to buy shield and sword seperatly (and it surely isnt such a huge benefit that its "unfair" to everyone else.

The ability to return items, honest mistake happen from time to time, and recover his tome/scrip value should be a thing. It's not like the devs can't put some rules to prevent any kind of abuse, like a limited time to do it, if you do anything that gives XP you no longer can't return it, if you use it to glamour you no longer can return it, if you enter in an instance you no longer can return it and similars.

Even if I didnt sound like that, I actually agree with that - I still believe spending tomes on the wrong item isnt such a big deal and that its down to you to pay attention, but being able to fix that mistake immdiatly without having to use your "one time item restore" would be nice (under the conditions you've mentioned).

All the exchanges are there for inventory bloat so try provoke people in buying more retainers.

While I consider it debateable for other items (like the venture-tokens, beastman currency...) I dont believe it true in this case. Those weapon tokens are nothing you're supposed to hoard. You dont need to have them in your inventory for longer than the few minutes it takes you to exchange them together with the stone for the weapon of your choice. Again, my guess is that the system wont let you exchange tomes and the stone at the same time, so they needed that vehicel for the 1k tomes.

Sword and shield are separate because you can't get two items at once and they didn't want you to have to get another raid item for when you purchase the shield.

Yeah. it's a bad system. There should be a way to get a refund for tokens like that. you technically haven't spend them until you use them on a weapon, it's just a converted form of currency.


I also agree with you on the shield, since it's technically part of the pld weapon it should be with the sword, not isolated from it.

FFXIV has framework for multiple item acquisition from a single turn in. see the silver chocobo feathers, and weapon upgrade turn ins.
