Seals are important in todays game from relic to other items. Rolling on gear for that, glamour and for gearing it more than legitimate. Expecting people to pass when they can use gear for many reasons is expecting a lot. I know some will ask if something drops if they can get it and most will concede to let them get it. That happened today in an expert I was running.
I roll Need because I need it.
ok, ok, /s, but personally (and this is a question that everyone will have a different answer for, there is no 'unspoken rule' or other etiquette) I'll roll need if:
1. The gear is a direct upgrade for me
2. I'm low on seals and actively using them
3. That is some sweet looking gear, I'm gonna glam the shit out of that.
I've felt bad for rolling reason 3 but I don't really understand why - nobody needed the gear for an upgrade (or if they did, they didn't say so) and I DID just heal the dungeon, so I have every right to take the healer glam, imo. At this sort of time ingame, ie when I'm not really crafting or anything, I'll just greed, because I'd like the seals but I don't need 'em.
I don't get why people go all "ENTITLED!!1!!1!" when someone utilises an option that's there for them. Unless they're explicitly being a dick about it, the chances of something dropping your role can need on are the same for everyone unless there's double-role dps, surely?

I need on stuff I need and stuff I don't need. I am saving seals for SB

Personally for me Need is only if the gear is an upgrade. If I'm looking to get a specific piece for glamor, then I ask if anyone else may need it before I hit Need.
Greed is if I could use it for company seals. I would feel bad hitting need and taking it from someone who actually could use it as an upgrade.

If you're rolling Need for anything other than direct gear upgrades, you're that guy and are part of the problem with humanity these days. Your glamour, seals, desynth, or whatever else falls under greed, simply because all of these things are things you want but don't actually need.
Just because the button can be pushed on a piece of gear that you might find useful for non-gearing purposes, doesn't mean you're entitled to the thing more than anyone else. It's a simple matter of the devs not thinking their systems through and designing said systems poorly.
You shouldn't be able to roll Need if you have a piece of gear in your inventory (character, armoury chest, retainers, etc) that is better than, or if your level is a tier or more higher than the content (ie you are level 54 while doing a run of Dusk Vigil, your gearing tier would be Sohm Al so you are automatically removed from Need rolls), etc.
Fortunately, the devs have figured it out and the new loot systems in 4.x will alleviate much of the problems in the current system.

Say what now? The only difference I have seen announced in regards to loot is that each person will get a box at the end of the dungeon with an additional piece of loot. Nothing has been said (that I have seen, please correct me if I am wrong) about changing the actual need/greed system.

The chest at the end of the dungeon gives each player a piece of gear from the dungeon's total loot table that is specifically for their current job. Other members of your party will still be able to be assholes and effectively steal the loot you actually need to gear up on each of the bosses from the normal chests, but your personal chest ensures you won't spend years in the dungeon like you do nowadays.Say what now? Maybe someday the devs will finally catch up with the proper design of nowadays which is just straight up personal loot from every encounter...

You are certainly entitled your opinion, however, in my case if people think they should have first dibs on the healer gear then they can queue as the healer. Since they didn't, I will continue to see that my need for it to benefit my main job (via relic or mats for crafting gear for myself) supercedes their desire to use it on an alt job.The chest at the end of the dungeon gives each player a piece of gear from the dungeon's total loot table that is specifically for their current job.
