Its really not. Its all about learning the job. To start you should really look over your skills, see which ones give you opportunities to heal less (regens etc.), and form in your mind how long you have downtime when using those. It is ok to be cautious when you are first starting out, when I was on SCH, I would never DPS unless rouse was available, and even then I would drop out of cleric before rouse dropped off. The main thing we are looking for isn't your skill or damage numbers, but your mentality to improve, and I see that lacking slightly with your hesitance.

If you have an FC or even LSs, ask for advice, and I'm sure more experienced healers will give you some pointers, maybe even help you practice.

Think about this way. You're a member of the party and the party's objective is completing whatever content you're doing. Now, you have an amount of resources, that is, your MP. Ideally, if you want to play optimally or close to it, you want to do whatever you can to clear the content as soon as possible while making sure that your party members don't die with the resources you're given.
MP not spent is MP wasted that could be better used to assist the party. You can only use MP to heal (or prevent damage with shields) or to deal damage, so if you don't need to heal in a particular moment, you're supposed to dps to achieve the common objective of the party.

The reason why some people get mad at healers not dpsing in dungeons is that healing in dungeons is very, very easy, even more so if party members are decently equipped. Actually, it is borderline boring. If you're just healing in a dungeon, you're either being lazy or scared. Whatever the case is, you're definitely playing suboptimally. You're wasting time if you're just idling and "paying attention to mechanics" (other party members must pay attention to mechanics as well while maximizing their dps), or wasting mana if you're overhealing. You're not putting any effort in the game and you're probably using 3 out of 20+ skills the game has provided you with. If all party members were to put minimal effort while playing, clearing a dungeon would probably take almost 1 hour. Tanks would pull only 1 mob at a time because aoe rotation is so hard (sarcasm), dps whould just spam 1 single attack because who cares, they're still dealing damage, so they're doing their job, right?
All in all, healers refusing to dps are just trapped in the (wrong) mindset that they should just do the bare minimum required from their role while the rest of the party does the job for them. Because, as many people said before, you can literally complete an expert dungeon letting your fairy do all the healing if your a sch, or casting diurnal aspected benefic on the tank once every 20 seconds if you're an ast (+ the occasional aoe heal).
