You are right! I just did some googling and realised I'm on a JP server. Will this affect gameplay? Seeing as how I am still quite early in the game (L16 main), should I start another character on an English-speaking server?

If you don't speak japanese you might want to play on NA servers. Or play on Tonberry since it's the "international" japanese server.
Btw, after relocation NA servers are in California so you'll probably have a good ping even if you live in Japan.

I see thanks! I stay pretty far from NA (SE Asia) so not sure if that would affect the ping. Anyway, I'll probably run a few guildhests or duties on the JP server with your recommendation on the language and see if comms is an issue first. If so, it's not too late to start again on another server I suppose.
