Ancient currency for ancient stuff. People will still want the old level 50 gear - for leveling and glamour if nothing else - so there need to be some way to purchase it. So why not use an existing currency?
I do wonder if poetics will really be used for the level 60 gear as well, or if that will be bought with tomestones of scripture(?) with some new currency introduced for the level 70 stuff?

Poetics still remain in the game so that players who only have the base ARR game registered to their service account can purchase ARR endgame tomestone gear. Just like how Scripture will remain so that those who only have ARR + HW can purchase endgame tomestone gear. There are still players who only have the base game registered to their account, so if all tomestone gear, new and old, were only available for purchase using the game's current endgame tomestone currency, then those who haven't purchased expansions wouldn't be able to get any gear past what the MSQ hands them, which wouldn't be considered fair.

Plus, the developers still add items to older tomestone currency to give players reasons to farm for them. A good example would be the pre-nerfed 200-210 Anima step. Before you could only buy unidentifiable seeds and bones with 680 Poetics; you couldn't buy them with Esoterics, and Lore didn't exist in the game at that point. So either you grind out Allied Seals (1,000 per), run Gordias Normal for 10 tokens, farm ARR beast tribes currency, or you could farm for Poetics, which was probably the fastest/easiest way considering roulettes give you a decent amount alone. (Gordias was probably also easy for A1N and A2N.) While the currency may be considered "ancient," it's not like it's completely useless.

With regards to the topic at hand, being able to earn Scripture while running Leveling or 50 Roulette as a sub-60 job would be considered double-dipping. You can have experience, or you can have tomes, but you can't have both. The tomes exist as a compensation for max-level characters to run roulettes/older content. If you could get both endgame currency and experience from running on sub-60 jobs, there would be no reason to go back and run them as frequently once you hit cap, since you would have geared up early.

Actually, if the previous live letter is any indication (specifically the part quoted by Rongway on page 1), then Scripture might not remain with the release of Stormblood, and the gear bought with it will be moved to the Poetics vendor.

Unless "Furthermore, starting in 4.0, all previous tomestone exchangeable gear will be available via poetics." is talking about all the gear previous to scripture tomestones.

I think with regards to their comment about previous Tomestone gear, that it may be referring to making, for example, Law, Esoteric, Lore and Scripture gear all available for purchase with Scripture Tomestones (as opposed to Centurio Seals), and ARR tomestone gear (can't really count i90 gear since the job quests hand it to you now, but maybe Darklight--even though you can get it in dungeons--and Poetics gear) all available via Poetics? I feel like that would make more sense based on what I said about how some players don't have expansions registered to their account, and only own the base game. While they wouldn't be able to equip level 60 gear, I feel like it wouldn't make much sense to allow it to be purchased with Poetics as opposed to Scripture. You know?

It would be like "Yeah, so I know that you can't level past 50, but check out this level 60 gear you could buy for the small price of xxx Allagan Tomestones of Poetics! Can't use it though, unless you buy Heavensward, but lookie! Also, check out this sick Dark Knight AF gear? Nice, right! You can buy it, but you can't use it unless you buy the expansion!!" (Of course, that could also be a good marketing tactic on SE's part. /think)

I could be wrong, but I'm basing my speculation of Scripture staying around just on how the devs kept Poetics after ARR ended and HW was released. I tend to take the things they say with a grain of salt until I actually see them implemented in game. ^^;;

I thought this was pretty obvious. To have an option to buy high level gear for level 50 jobs.

Yeah. I won't lie, I'm farming poetics to get the Ironworks gear for all my 50 and sub-50 jobs these days. The same goes for Lore for my other lvl 60 job. The thought of having to grind out the HW dungeons (again...again....again...again) to level up gear makes me want to puke. Having a single currency that can be earned doing a good mix of activities to purchase "previous" gear would be nice for when I get bored and decide to level the rest of my DoW and DoM classes. Plus...teh glamorz....

It's not a huge deal just figured by now that a newer currency could be used for older gear as Stormblood will introduce new currency

Well, it kind of goes back to what I was saying before. If they introduced a new currency that was used to buy all newer and older gear, and the new currency was locked behind the expansion, those who don't own the expansion wouldn't be able to buy older gear with the new currency. Hence why they kept Poetics, so that those who only have ARR can earn their Poetics and buy gear with it.
