SE wanted mentors to be helpful etc, but it's really hard when most people don't even know their job. Leave alone people like the OP meantioned. Mentor in this game isn't mentor and I find the real mentors those who actually take them to help people with the game, as in rotation, fights and so on. Do they wear a crown? Nope. Not saying everyone is like this who wear a mentor crown, but it's such a small amount of them who actually do help in every form.

Edit: Since the person below me didn't get what I said.
How can people be a mentor, when they don't even try to help or even know how a fight works, yet know how to play some of their classes. I've met so many who just level fast to be one and can't even play their class. It sucks OP met people like those ''mentors'', but mentor in this game is just a status, nothing else. The crown is aesthetics for most people.

So you start something new as a veteran? You don't need to ask questions because you are all-knowing and thus a God? If you don't need to ask questions or learn how to do new things then obviously you claim to be a God, because normal people gain intelligence from asking questions, learning from mistakes and having people teach them.

Think you didn't get what I said. Most mentors aren't mentors. They don't even know how to play the game and doesn't even try to help people being a ''mentor''. So each time a person brings up ''mentor did this, did that'' How can you help a new player when you can't even play yourself? Most just use the crown aestethics. The OP talked about 2 healers giving a new player a hard time for being killed a lot. Those mentor could easily explain to the person, but like I said mentors are - most of the time- not mentors.
    Edit:
The way you replied to my post, makes me think it's okay for mentors to ask for help? I'm extremely confused, but shouldn't mentors be mentors, as in helping people WHO are NEW to the game or perhaps need help with mechanics or how a job works? :/

The takeaway from this are that some people are dicks. This applies to mentors, as well - there's no "not a dick" screening process as part of the mentor qualification process.

If these particular mentors were stupid enough to actually demand in chat that you abandon duty, and threaten to sit out the fight if you don't comply, then you have a pretty ironclad case against them. Report to a GM. The GM will NOT tell you whether any punishment has been meted out, so you will never know. Don't stress out over it.

It is, in theory, possible for bad attitude mentors to be stripped of their mentorship. I've never personally heard of it actually happening, but, again, GMs are not allowed to share details of the punishments they give. It's written in the warning you see when you apply to become a mentor, though, so in theory should be possible.

Sometimes you have to make a decision. If people keep dying, and don't listen then perhaps it would be best to kick. As a mentor I go by a simple 3 strike rule. If I see sprouts I ask if they know fight, if not I educated. First is trial runs, second they should have at least an understanding. After third sorry best for the group to replace and ask for a vote.

That would have gone far enough already for me and you can bet I'd be starting to put up a vote kick for them. The writing was already on the wall and a recipe for disaster was already being cooked up with them in the party to me. People make mistakes, weither they're new, vets or just in between. It's fine, its okay, it happens and expecting perfection 100% of the time especially in a PUG setting, you might as well be asking for the moon delivered to you on a silver platter. I wouldn't have tried to talk to them, reason with them or plead them. Their reaction at the start is enough to tell me trying to do so would be like talking to a brick wall and expecting conversation back. It's just better to kick before things escalate and make the group miserable and scare the new players with performance anxiety by making them feel like they're under a microscope.

What could help the mentor system is if they changed the crown icon to something more scholarly. Maybe like laurel plant icon or something of the sort. Maybe over time people who don't want to teach new players will just leave the icon after they get that achievement? /shrugs and leave it to use people who care about helping others.

In some other thread, back when it was clear the crown attract a wrong sort of crowd, it was suggested the icon be watering can. Personally I would like that.

If you say 'pls' because it's shorter than 'please', I say 'no' because it's shorter than 'yes'.

I'm not even a mentor (although I could get it if I wanted) because I don't think you need a cute symbol by your name in order to help people. I really do wish we had a separate sort of "abusive behavior" reporting option for this particular group, similar to how we can one-click and report RMT and it silences them after two or three reports. Enough of these reports and they lose their mentor status.

I am a mentor but I don't use the icon. Showing it is optional. However being mentor gives access to Novice Network which at least on my server has turned out well and works for the purpose.
