maybe they just saving it for 2.0? since that is the original main story quest and now is more about the 7th umbral era you know? They enlarged Toads, it didnt mean they had to go back and reanimate it for a large size. My point being: I don't think the size makes too much of a difference.
And you can have like 20 rainbow peistes on your screen at once, all moving around separately, in a non-instanced environment too, and your compter doesnt explode because of that, so it stands to reason that you therefore should be able to handle a single mob with much less complexity than 20 individual peistes on your screen at once.
I feel that new Leviathan, does a lot more justice to it's linage in the FF series. Colors and concept wise. Speculating their decision isn't getting us nowhere is in this thread. It could be the animation aspect, just as much as a needed redesign. It's two valid points why they would move forward with the new Leviathan. In the end, I'll take the new over the old any day.

the reason why they call it a sea serpent is because they don't know of its name. Only beastmen tribes worship primal gods, thus they know the names of the primals.
In a cut scene, Ifrit asked a question if we worship the other primal such as titan, leviathan, garuda etc. the reply was that they don't know of those names.
So I based my theory on this fact.
It might do justice to "tradition" but it does injustive to creativity and imagination. Final Fantasy might differ from title to title, but creativity has always been a staple, consistent throughout the series. Resting on tradition is boring. The "original leviathan" as I shall refer to him as was much more inspired than the new predictable cliche one. Ugh.I feel that new Leviathan, does a lot more justice to it's linage in the FF series. ZZZZZZZzzzzz
Boring. Wake me up when this FF8 re-enactment is over so I can play a new, inspired, creative FF title instead of hackneyed remake.
To be honest, the sea serpent in the opening cutscene ( I refuse to call "it" Leviathan ) just seems like a super-sized pugil from XI. It looks more like a pug, than an actual summon.
You sir, have no imagination. When I say it looks like an oversized pug, it's referenced as taking the basic concept of a pug, it's normal properties and expanding them to a bigger scale. Granted the anatomy changed in certain aspects. But the basic body features are still there.
The distinctive features of a pug, not only facial but even the spiral back made it to the elongated and more mature version that passed over as the sea serpent on the XIV limsa intro.
Nice observation, they indeed share certain traits. But I don't think a jaw shape and whiskers are enough to make both "look the same". To me the sea-serpent was meant to be this game's Leviathan, if this is still the case remains to be seen however. You sir, have no imagination. If we look at the past versions of leviathan and current one designated for 2.0, there aren't any other distinctive features that could relate in concept to the sea serpent, other then the elongated body. It's facial features, shape and overall appearance is not related to leviathans original concept if it were to be compared.
To say the least, the sea serpet in the limsa intro doesn't have that finesse- those sharp angles, and slick look that make the leviathan look deadly, even more underwater.

That could very well be one of the many reasons why it needed to be redesigned. They did say they wanted to make the game look more like Final Fantasy during their revision.
The original team seems to have gone for a more "realistic" approach to the design of most creatures in the game, if you look at it that way the Sea-Serpent looks like a realistic Leviathan wouldn't you agree?
I can understand your view and I might have "argued" a bit more than I wished, but my post was mainly to point-out that the Pug creature you've posted doesn't look remotly related to the Sea-Serpent we've seen in the cut-scene.
Whatever its name is, its a very big fish.
