I suspect that many, perhaps the majority, perhaps even the vast majority, or people paying extra for retainers, will continue to pay for those retainers. We collect so much stoff, and then there are the ventures and of course the MB slots. There are many reasons to keep retainers.
I considered it a commitment from SE, after all I read it on the Internet...
That aside, I was just thinking about this, when StormBlood arrives, we will have 3 games worth of zones to play with. I know that SE will want to focus on the new SB story arc(s), 8 and 24 man raids and such. But I would like for them to also create a small team within their team who are focused on fleshing out the ARR and HW areas with new stories, new quests and even a few new dungeons.
Instead of beating us over the head with various artificial reasons to re-run old content to make areas appear alive, give us reasons, real, current reasons, to go back. With SB upping the level bar to 70, and the advent of jump potions, the ARR areas in particular will be vulnerable to becoming deadzones. So please, SE, please give us current reasons to go back to these areas. They're well designed and executed and full of 'life', but without something to do, they are little more than tutorial zones in a game that no longer needs that tutorial.
I would like to see similar attention paid to the Heavens Ward areas in due course as well. No sense in constantly abandoning these places where the investment in design is already spent, so the cost of revitalizing them is limited to the addition of a few pieces of new content.

The thing is that unlike another big MMO that uses their beta tests as way to generate hype and interest in an expansion (read: WoW with Warlords of Draenor and Legion), we have no idea of what is coming with Stormblood. Like at all.
At least by the time WoD and Legion launched I had an idea of what Blizzard had done with the classes, the very basics of changes to existing systems, and yes, what the first 15 minutes of one of the new zones looked like. So you can't even make a call based on what you see, because there's nothing to see aside from what SE decides to show, and the only way you'll know whether you got a dud or not is by buying the expansion. So players are stuck in a situation where they have to fork over money to see whether the game is going in a direction they like before deciding to continue their sub or moving on. Simply put, players who are skeptical are in a somewhat shitty situation.
* The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
* Design ideas:
Red Mage - COMPLETE (https://tinyurl.com/y6tsbnjh), Chemist - Second Pass (https://tinyurl.com/ssuog88), Thief - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/vdjpkoa), Rune Fencer - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/y3fomdp2)
We're in the internet age >.>
There will be dozens of reviews and play videos as soon as it becomes playable to give you more than enough info to judge by, not just by gaming magazines but also reddit, friends, this very forum, bloggers, youtube etc.
I mean, I know the idea to not buy the expansion at launch sounds crazy, but, uh... I'm just sayin'. You could cancel your sub a month in advance, occasionally google how the expansion turned out, then decide based on reviews to give it a shot or not.
Can we wait for Stormblood to actually come out before making these "educated" guesses? Hmm?
Nobody is expecting huge changes, they are expecting new things to make the game overral better, for example, we know we gonna have better NA servers, but question is, how much will it cost? Eu had theirs 1 year and half ago, correct me if I'm wrong.
Then we will have more items in inventory, housing etc. Now, the question is, does the money go all on those two things? People mention redmage, samurai etc, heavensward had 3 new jobs. All I'm saying, they have almost 60% more the amount now then they had on HW and yet it looks like they dont. I agree with you saying there is something we expect and dissapointment, however, that's their own fault for saying they have way more money on Bloodstorm and looks like it's not.
