TONBERRY - Character creation restriction fix > kicking AFK players

    Hi there!
I notice at certain times of the day there are servers that are locked to players for character creation. This can be a bummer when wanting to pick the server your friends are on and especially for Tonberry being unoffical AUS/NZ server.

I have noticed a lot of players AFK and I log in 2 hours later seeing the same person AFK. Yesterday someone was just dancing in a pig suit.

Implementing a feature that logs out AFK players after 30 minutes would mean more fresh faces running around and more active players. I have noticed after creating a new character that there is no one in the lower level areas to play with. This is because of the character creation restrictions of course. I assume this would deter some people from playing the game thinking the server is empty.
I think it would be healthy for the game to have more people creating characters.
Comment below on what you think and whether you are for or against an automated AFK booter.

They've had one twice now, at launch, and at 3.0 launch. they got rid of it due to player demands.

Also, kicking AFK players offline doesn't affect the character creation restrictions AFAIK. That is solely based on the total number of characters on the server (aka server population), and the only reason some servers are well beyond said restriction is because paid transfers get around the creation restrictions.

No, its based on average server load i believe. Balmung actually has one of the lower character created counts, but the highest active population.

the character creation restriciton has nothing to do with how many players are currently online. the amount of total players on X server leads to the restriction. what this restriciton does is encourage people to create characters on lower populatetd servers, to spread the playerbase out and prevent small servers from dying completely. i bet there is tons of free space for new characters on tonberry, but since the population is already big they restrict the character creation on purpose to lead the stream of new players onto smaller servers.

It might be both. Balmung also has an obscenely high total population from all the transfers, regardless of how many/few were originally from it. I tend to lean towards total characters on server due to memory storage and the fact that Hyperion tends to be restricted yet I've seen a much smaller visibly active population on average over time as patch cycles continue, but the overall player count on that last unoffical census data still had us with a decent "active" population. Happened in ARR, happened again in HW, and I expect similar in SB.

Here is a tip for you, make a character and save it.
Have the job, birthdate and name all picked out.
Now try just before servers go down for maintenance to make that character, if it fails then try to do it just as servers come up.

Your friends chance will be improved, luckily you can try it today. Esp. since they just released the current restrictions and Tonberry is open.

Thanks for the info guys! Good to know it's not based around current players online.

It's the active load that causes the lock out. Which is why you can refresh the list in the character creation screen to see if it has opened up and why they say it updates after so many minutes. If it was based on the total number of characters on the server you wouldn't be able to sneak on right before/right after maintenance times. You can still do that for Balmung, though it has the shortest window to do so since it doesn't take long for enough people to log on to lock it.

I'm on balmung, I would love an afk kick timer, if it was set to 2+ hours.

I log get busy RL stuff comes up or I get distracted, lots of times I come back within 2 hours. Sometimes I forget to log out when I start getting busy.

Also it's active logins. There is about a 30 second window to make a character when servers come back on after maintenance.
