You bring some damn good points. Too often people think Tanking is hard. Not where it matters. DPS has always been one of the harder jobs. When raiding in just about every game I've played thus far, the challenge has always been getting good DPS that can play their class. Not just a role of damage. But the class (or Job in FF14). Every class brings something to the table and it exists there for a reason.

Absolutely. I've got the feeling that many groups think that DPS are "A dime a dozen". Yeah maybe in DF, but not in a raid setting. Groups can be a little trigger happy with the boot because they think getting another DPS is easy, when in reality, it's a huge setback.

Just think about it. You're progressing in A11 and your group kicked the ninja because they felt he was under preforming.

You have to find a player that:
    • Is the job that you're looking for
    • Has progressed to A11
    • Meets the standard for savage content
    • Meets the standard that your group holds recruits to

Not as easy to find as you think. Almost all eligible players are in statics already this late in the cycle and probably have already completed A12S.

I'd add that they needed to be on your groups server but with cross server PF it's not as bad now.

Just finding someone that's progressed as far as your group has is hard enough. Often times groups have to bring people they've deemed worthy through the content, which is something that groups really don't want to have to do. My group brings subs through the content after we clear it, but most groups don't have a bunch of subs that are ready to go if someone has to sit out.

Tanks and healers typically don't get replaced. I always see DPS getting replaced. Why is that? Well lets see. In order for a tank or a healer to to get to the point of being able to raid, they have to know how to heal and tank. (Which already aren't hard to do.) Sure you could say they went through palace or just spammed fates but chances are if they did that, they're already not willing to raid with those jobs. DPS jobs are different. They can struggle with their rotations or be lazy throughout the leveling dungeons and still clear it. Worst thing that happens is that someone goes and vents in the DF megathread or whatever. When it comes time to raid, it becomes a lot more visible. I'm not talking about DPS that are just plain lazy. I'm talking about DPS that honestly do the best they can and don't quite pull what everyone says they should be pulling. Now some people would say, "Well Healers and Tanks need to dps too!". Yeah they might have to but really, how hard is it? For a healer it's place dots and spam something like stone III. Not really that involved, compared to the 1 minute long opener that a ninja player has to pull off if they want a chance at pulling decent dps, and less than stellar DPS doesn't cut it in the content that really matters in this game.

As a healer, you think I envy the dps in my raid? Think again. I'll gladly take the blame for a wipe if it means I don't have to deal with awful mechanics such as enochian or wanderers minute. I don't know how DPS put up with it.

Oh yeah and that player I mentioned in my last post? He's playing DRK now.

    Here is:

    HEALER
    • being geared for healing tank pulling the whole map
    • learn its dps rotation
    • stance dance for heal and dps
    • make sure no one dying
    • being watchful of aggro
    • know mechanics
    • focus heal who doesn't know mechanics
    • in bad situations, decide who let die and who not, who to ress and who not
    • know he will be blamed for anything goes wrong
You missed off doing additional mechanics i.e grabbing generators in A9s

I may be in the minority here with this thinking, but as someone who mains a healer, I actually have to disagree with this post in a lot of ways.

Personally, I think Healers are one of the most forgiving positions you can play in this game and requires the least amount of knowledge/skill to play. It can be frustrating when players aren't playing optimally or following mechanics, which makes your job annoying, but I still feel Healer is very binary. "Heal low health targets, know mechanics enough to not die" While it's true, we healers can get blamed for when things go south, it has almost always been my experience that the blame is gets pushed onto the DPS or Tanks and usually in that order.

DPS/Tanks are the most mechanic heavy roles in the game as their lack of knowledge/mistakes have a larger impact on failing duties/raids. They have to know who to target, what adds to pull, in which order, at what times, what status effects can't stack without causing wipes, cycling through large numbers of targets, combos and rotation timing, holding aggro while moving/avoiding and so much more. These are large reasons why I've stayed away from these roles.

Usually, 80% of the mechanics in fights Healers can completely ignore because they do not apply to them. Heal your target, don't get hit. A bad healer also obviously will create issues, but they are insanely rare because of how easy the role is to play. Not to mention most bad healers just don't DPS which only slows the progress down, but doesn't affect the end game.

I dunno, just my opinion. =X

A lot of gamers will often choose a default class or the most normal class and play at a normal difficulty when playing a new game. They do this to figure out the game a bit and then go back and restart with a harder class and/or increase the difficulty.

This is the same for MMOs as most new people will choose DPS by default because without knowing anything about the game, they assume that all they do is deal damage. Once they really dive into the game they realize that a DPS job has a LOT of responsibilities and expectations of doing a ton of damage. Once they've invested the time into their job, they probably just stick to it for the most part.

The gamers who start with a Tank or Healer are the same types of people who play with an alchemy build for Witcher, or go with melee build for Fallout, and on and on because they like the challenge up front as they are learning about the game.
That was exactly the case with me. I came into the game knowing I wanted to heal, but wanted to get the feel for group play before taking on the responsibility. Lo and behold the wonder that is the arcanist class: Starts off as DPS and turns into a healer if choosing the path of Scholar.

However, I never really looked back. When the yokai event was around I leveled up all DoW classes with the exception of tanks to level 30+ via a mix of dungeon runs and FATEs. After all that was done though, I never really touched them again. Level 30 is still training wheels content, but I knew I was a career healer at this point, and best to invest my time to getting my healers stronger. I'm fully aware of the intricacies that are involved with DPS jobs, but their style of interactive play just really isn't my cup of tea. At least not from a melee perspective. I'm all caster!

Personally, as someone that came into this game as a WHM main (though proficient as SCH/AST too) and later switched to Bard main, I sort of see this in an alternate way.

When something goes awry in a run, who usually gets blamed first? The tank or the healer. Their performance can be easily measured using what the game already provides (tank holding aggro on enemies, what everyone's HP bars look like for healers). If either drops the ball, the party wipes. DPS? Nothing (that is legal) besides the speed at which enemies die, if they do at all. If they drop the ball, it usually just results in a shorter dungeon run unless there's a failed DPS check that causes a party wipe, of which the majority of dungeons/trials do not have such a thing (and really shouldn't, but that's besides the point). With the way this game's meta is set up, tanks and healers are also constantly pressured to multi-task by contributing higher DPS whenever they can on top of that.

I feel that this game, as it currently is (either intentionally or through the community), shoves responsibility away from the DPS to the Healers and Tanks in the vast majority of instances. And that is why the perception that tanking is difficult is so prevalent (and I will admit, it is massively intimidating even to someone like myself).

There was a time I ran Antitower without Grit because the healer I randomly got dropped in with was good and somebody I knew and the two damage dealers were sorely undergeared for the place.
