Gear Design Contest (Caster/Healer Edition): Winners Announced

These are both... unappealing and... kinda ugly IMO. I was way more impressed with the runners-up. Just not for me I guess.

I really wish they would have let the community have some small vote in who the winners were. A vast majority of the community from what I saw was equally disappointed with the tank gear that won and from what i've seen with the caster/healer so far on this thread the sentiment is no different.. I don't think SE knows what their community wants. Although, im sure they picked winners for this contest on completely different and arbitrary criteria TBH

Nice but why female only?

Pretty sure the caster one is male only as well in that concept art. Oh boy they showed boobs in a tiny preview. Still doesn't entirely show both sets and you know they'll have lots of large differences based on the gender body types in game. ( this always seems to happen with shared glamour gear )

God that caster gear is so hideous... I can't get over it.

To the people in this thread demanding that they show a male version of the healer set. Has it not dawn on you all that the person that submitted the drawings, had decided only to used a female character as their base model. But all well...logic.

Wans't one of the rules to design both male and female outfits unless unisex?

OT: I love the caster top, minus the arm/cape thingy. And I personally wonder how are they gonna achieve that part. A piece that goes from arm to arm is gonna cause so many weird animations and clipping when our chars do animations interacting with the arms lol.

Healer one is terrible, no male variation and can't wait for the horrendous clipping to happen. Caster one is pretty good, minus the butt window but I can live with it.

As another poster pointed out before, they are both on cats, and also both winners are Japanese.

While I have no idea whether it's the same person, there is a Taiwanese FFXIV illustrator called Kare who entered the tank contest and I think there's a decent chance that's who the winner was. Just because they did the annotations in Japanese doesn't necessarily mean the winners are Japanese.

That being said, I wouldn't want to wear either in their current state. I do like the looks of the healer set better than the caster though. The caster set looks like a rectangle box on your head.

It would be nice to see some of SE's western fanbase shown some recognition. Off topic, but that healer outfit still has no excuse to be featured.

On the caster winner:

We received a wider variety of designs in this category of the gear design contest when compared to the Tank edition. This lead to quite a bit of trouble when it came to selecting a grand prize winner, but in the end, we chose this design based on the fact that it was something we’d never done before. The design will really force the dev. team to answer questions about how they would replicate aspects of this design into the game. It seems the team took up this challenge, and the character designers and animation designers are already racking their brains trying to think how to replicate the cloak and flames. We’re expecting to feature a ranged magic DPS outfit that has never existed before, so please look forward to it!

So basically, "screw what we think actually looks good, we just like the fact that this puts our 3D modeling skills to the test"? That's pretty much what I'm reading here.

Just like with the ranged magic DPS designs, the healer category also featured a lot of unique designs which led to a lot of difficulties for the judges. In the end, a theme of “light-geared medical wear,” which we’ve never really had, and the difference in volume between the shoulder/chest area and the hip area became the key element that led us to choosing this entry as the grand prize winner. When looking at these types of designs, from a style perspective, this is very difficult design to implement. We haven’t challenged ourselves with these type of designs in the past, but we have started to look into how we can implement it, so please look forward to it!

How insulting it must be to create a truly remarkable piece of artwork for this contest only to lose out because the dev team thought it might be fun to see how they could implement poofy thigh pants without clipping issues. Oh well, tbh, I've never enjoyed a contest winner so far so no point rustling my jimmies over it. Just kind of a shame given that there were some REALLY well-designed outfits out there (even if I didn't personally like the styles, they at least weren't super simple like the winners).

You know, I kinda wish some of the runner-up creations were implemented, too. No offense to the winners, it's just that I kinda fell in love with some of the runner-up designs.
