Some people just really don't like being told what to do or how to do things better, even if it was the most polite and nicely worded set of help in the world they'll still view it as harassment because logic.
Everyone needs an internet hug every now and then.
I'd believe it. I had someone in these forums accuse me of abusing the vote kick feature because I said that I like to help players in PotD get upgrades to AP if they need it, and skip silvers when no one does, but would vote kick someone if they would continuously get group members killed or sat afk in a corner not helping. Apparently I'm supposed to let jerks wipe groups or leech, otherwise I'm harassing and abusing them.
But in reality a report likely goes unanswered. When one complains about harassment. The GM looks to see if anything bad or disparaging was said. If not, they close it.
...after reading the answers I am considering dropping the mentor status away. I always try to help players, hell, even explain mechanics while I am healing in boss fight when the rest of the team doesn't wait for me to finish (a disturbing experience). This kind of behavior just kills the mood of trying to be helpful towards others.
Just something I just thought about, does this happened after someone (don't know who right now) addressed you could report because of playstyle or is it old news and I was just lucky?
I hope your friend could solve it without incidents.
Honestly I'm like you in regards to the mentor status at times but, we can't give up. Some people are often looking for help but are at times terrified to ask in case they get the cold shoulder or yelled at by elitists and the like. None of us get paid for being helpful and nice but it does feel good at the end of the day when someone genuinely listens and takes your advice because you are truly trying to help them get more enjoyment out of the game. It is generally a thankless thing but its still worth it when it pays off....after reading the answers I am considering dropping the mentor status away. That is true, I also had that kind of talks with sprouts to not be afraid of asking if they needed to. A few of those times I felt great giving them advice.Honestly I'm like you in regards to the mentor status at times but, we can't give up. I've had two instances I can remember of someone taking my help and advice. I have countless instances of "You don't pay my sub" come up. This community really doesn't feel like it's worth helping.
The fun part in all of this is that this community started pretty healthy and the things that happened before HW came along were pretty rare.
I don't see why you would drop it. I mostly just answer questions in Novice Network and offer tactics and pointers in dungeons with new players. If a few players don't want help, that's cool. Being a mentor is about making yourself available for those who do want help, not taking it upon yourself to make sure everyone strictly complies with established theorycrafting and/or "the meta."...after reading the answers I am considering dropping the mentor status away. In a duty, its mostly not a big deal to describe what the fights have to offer."teach players to be better"
But within a duty it is the wrong place to expect getting teached in how to play a class and how classses, jobs and crossclasses do work. This is something the player has to be done BEFORE entering content like ex primals or Savage.
