It's enough for people to experience the game without trying to rush as much in as possible within a 14 day period. Because as a brand new player the game can be confusing and even more so if you're new to MMORPG's in general. It lets people gather their bearings.
As I stated in a earlier post, cause yea the base game cost so much money don't it? There other points in that post that about my view if wish to check it out on page 2.
It isn't about the subscription money. It is whether someone wants to invest their time in the game and not rushing them to that decision. By giving them time to discover things at their own pace you increase the likelihood that they will stick around.
I feel FFXIV has two type of players (three with trial)
1: Final Fantasy fans (they going to play it regardless)
2: MMO fans
3: f2p crowd
In my experience in playing the game see plenty of people come and go and why XIV is set up I don't think it a game that grows on people (yea there are exceptions). People either usually love the game and stay with it or play for a few months and quit. I imagine it will be the same with the trial, but I pointed out the price of the game not the sub. Which when you buy the game which might be as low $10 they get 30 free days to experience the full game without bunch of restrictions decide if they want to sub or not. If that not enough time to make a decision well idk what to say then. I just don't see a high conversion to paid subs from the "unlimited" trial as I think it will mainly attract group number three.
