though your analogy is a bit better than the football goal keeper thing.

however it isn't exactly accurate. a combat medic generally doesn't join in with the fighting. Generally speaking, they only fight in self defense, usually only when they come under attack, and usually at short range while trying to treat casualties. also your bog standard section wont likely have a medic attached, seeing as all marines (and indeed all forces personnel) are trained in first aid. a medic might be attached to the platoon, but he probably wouldn't go out on a fighting patrol with the section. you could say marines are more like paladins lol.
