I don't understand why RP would push people away, it's not like you can't ignore it, or make new chat tabs removing certain chat options. I really miss the marketboard on my old populated server, being able to buy things cheap and I wasn't even putting effort into making gil. On small servers marketboard is controlled by a few players, overpricing everything. Things take forever to sell, so even if you can sell an item for a couple of millions, there's no purpose behind it. Empty areas are kinda depressing too. Fates take too long to complete and are ignored as a method to level up. The only downside I see on Balmung would be the housing situation if you're interesting on it.

Unless you are interested in roleplaying or have friends there, I can think of no good reason to transfer to Balmung.I'm currently revolving in the Primal Data Centers and I've been thinking about mixing things up. I hear Balmung is one of the more populated servers, which interests me greatly!
I know it's infamous(?) for Roleplaying, which I don't mind the scenery of Roleplaying, but will I be expected to participate?
Comparatively, what are some key differences between Leviathan (My current server) and Balmung, besides the obvious?
(You will of course not have to participate in RP if you don't want to - not all players on Balmung are roleplayers after all.)
It is highly populated, yes. Overcrowded even.
Queues for Duty Finder won't be any shorter - those are datacenter wide anyway.

Well I'm from Balmung, I'm also an rper so I think I'm qualified to answer your questions. Balmung is over crowded to the point where you can't even get an apartment, so if you want housing of any kind, best find an FC that already has one.I'm currently revolving in the Primal Data Centers and I've been thinking about mixing things up. As for RPers, you are NOT expected to participate. If you are rped at, simple use double parenthesis and explain you're not an rper. Generally they will apologize and move on. Double parenthesis denote out of character speech for an rper, while there's a lot of writing styles out there, we've managed agree on using that to show when we are in character and out of character so it's a good tip to keep in mind.
Ul'dah...specifically the Quicksand is always a hotbed of activity for rpers...not always in a good way. To be honest it's really a showcase in some of the worst the server has to offer, our version of WoW's Goldshire Inn on the Moon Guard server.
That being said there are several events you may run into as you wander the world, some of the most notable are The Grindstone which is out by the Coffer and Coin in one of the Thanalans on Saturdays...I believe. It's a huge fighting tournament, often with up to 40 participants and even more just there to watch and cheer. In Limsa on Mondays there's a fighting class. Every month one group organizes a parade in honor of one of the Twelve. So the server is a bit more alive in unexpected places.
There's even a whole crew who rp as the Heavensward NPCs, you can even find a Hauchfant clone running about Coerthas, cheering on and helping lower level players.

No more cast bars for Bard! Thank you, Yoshi-P! All hail our lord and savior!
To op I'd say find an different server. I'm on rp/erp cesspool bulmog and I'm going to leave because i shouldn't have to hide functions which are part of the game to sorta enjoy it. You get inconsiderate players either souting or /say in areas where quests are. This server has gone down the toilet. So you will be better off on an server other than ones of the like.
I'm shocked this is even considered a downside. Consider this: If you're not an omnicrafter, and most of us aren't, it won't cost you the soul of your firstborn child in order to buy something.
Since in game money doesn't adjust for servers, you're passively making more gold comparatively than you would on other servers.
Man when someone told me that new winter jacket thing cost 50 mil on Leviathan I thought I was gonna have a cow. I thought 8 mil was already outrageously expensive.
There's lots of people lying down on the floor in Ul'dah now too.

I've been on it for years, and i can count on one hand the number of times i've been in awkward situations. For the most part, its blown out of proportion. Tho I hope more transfer off, its a bit overcrowded atm lol. I just have too much gil to easily move now, and an FC, and its nice being able to buy things for cheap. To op I'd say find an different server.
