Don't forget the ps3 was dropped not because by lack of love from devs, but because the game was using everything the console can give out, and without dropping the ps3 it were not possible to do new/oher stuff the devs are going to put in with next expansion. Ps3 is just the first victim, then will be the ps4 turn (as later as possible, I just bought it omg).

Devs clearly stated (by Yoshi's interview if I recall it correctly) they want the game in every platform possible.

Possible means a platform (hardware+legal stuff) that can deliver all that the game have to offer to the player. The interest towards Nintendo's Switch wasn't unexpected.

I would imagine PS4 support won't be dropped for quite some time, as they were be cutting out like half their sub base. Cause I'm sure there plenty of console players.

I don't know anyone on this game dev team, but know people in other MMO dev teams [at least studios with console versions]. The consensus seems to be: each console version makes more money than the PC version. These are in both consoles, meaning (XBO+PS4) > (PC*2)

No one sees it changing, so yea, I dare bet console support will never go away. PS4 support for this game will go away the day the main platform is the PS5.

Hell, I would not be shocked if the rumored FFXI Unreal remake that targets mobile does not end up in the Switch.

Won't be dropped till PS5 has been out for a couple of years. Maybe 2021 when 6.0 is releasing.

They're never going to totally abandon the console userbase. They'll just keep moving the game to the newest one to keep up with PC.

If there is a ps5. Sony and Microsoft are talking about taking consoles into the pc realm of allowing upgrades of individual components rather than whole new consoles. PS4 may literally be the last playstation as console players now them.

I doubt it. There's no reason for consoles to exist then. The point of a console is a convenient system to play games. You don't have to worry about your console not being able to handle certain games or having to upgrade parts of it.

You can doubt it but the executives that handle consoles for Sony and Microsoft both have come out and said the "next gen" model no longer works and they are looking to upgradable machines rather than brand new ones every few years.

They are not talking about moving consoles to the PC realm of upgrades, what they are talking about is to move consoles to the smartphone realm, where you get smaller but quicker refresh cycles that don't destroy backwards compatibility by reinventing the entire architecture. Full new device you may trade in or sell to get the new one, but no component upgrades.

EXACTLY the kind of thing the PS4 Pro and XBO Scorpio offer.

The last I heard on that issue, it'd be easy to do but the Xbox people want some really silly terms for it. Mainly they only want people who've bought a Xbox Live membership to be able to play it and for xbox players to have their own server that's segregated from the general population.

The source for that was other posters on the forums though so I'm not sure how reliable it is. From what I understand they do require a xbox live membership to fully access all features of other mmos like Destiny and the Division. But Sony does too so idk.
