I wouldn't be against it, especially since we have so many ways to cap tomestones nowadays people don't queue for dungeons nearly as often.I have no problem with people loving the game. As I said, having an alternate gearing option besides Tomestones would be enough to reduce a lot of the boring aspect of the game for me. The next upgradable weapon seems also more interesting than the Anima, thanks to Eureka as a dedicated content.
I left for a while because I got so sick of the grind back in 2.0. I think the breaking point for me was the FATE grinding for Atmas. I just got so tired of logging in to find myself farming FATEs for hours on end. Granted, I did play quite a bit back then, so burnout was pretty inevitable I think haha.
I doubt the formula has changed much, if at all, as I'm sure there's still a lengthy grind to get the best of everything. But even though that may be the case, I still expect myself to stay for a long time after Stormblood's release. I'm enjoying the game for what it's evolved to and don't have any lofty goals set for myself (getting the BiS items, etc.), so I'm playing pretty casually now and it's fun that way for me.
So while I may be in the camp of "hating the formula" (ie. weekly tome caps, chasing 1 set of gear, etc.), the overall game is a lot of fun because of how much content is/will be accessible to me given how much I currently play (and how far behind I am lol).
As for the formula, my problem with it is that it's being done in a way that's worse than 2.1. Too much focus on raids, not enough focus on trials, trials being too hard for what they offer, too much grinding for menial things like doing Mhachi or Alexander over and over for catch-up gear that wouldn't get me into any Alexander group. For me, as a returning player, the least effort, most benefical way to catch up would be simply capping my tomes and coming back next week and that's super boring. Luckily, I no longer care about gear, but if I did, I'd be very disappointed.
I'll try making a thread about it soon. The point is - the problem isn't the model, but how it's being done. Most of it comes from the "raid or die" mentality.
An mmo that stagnates its endgame isn't going to last long, it cannot hold interest with this formula forever.
Im only here for the story anymore, as the gameplay has started to lose me.
I wouldnt say that some games go years without adding new raids etc, and id say less than 25 percent of the play base even does raids or trails
We will see what stormblood has to offer then. I was not trying to be hostile with my thread It was more to see if you guys would still be playing. I've slowed my gaming down myself big time I'm not doing stuff anymore like I used to because the motivation does not lie with grinding. Cause if you grind hard for something in this game it will always be a huge disappointment. I truly wish some Horizontal progression can be introduced with stormblood. I wouldnt be opposed to some FFXI related content like beseiged etc either. How things are going now though it feels like aside from the storyline Stormblood might be a huge let down. Atleast for me I don't speak for anyone else.
While i will be getting Stormblood i have yet to pre-order, will only due so in May most likely and Heavansward i had pre-ordered as soon as it was available but have thought about leaving on multiple occasions... so not sure? lol
The formula they use goes back all the way to console FF games. If you want the best of the best, you're going to be doing a some things over and over and over again until you pull your own eyes out. It's why I stopped caring about maxing out my gear a long time ago and get better fulfillment and enjoyment exploring the other content the game has to offer. Three RL friends came with me when I subbed for FFXIV, and all three got to 60 and tome grinding in a matter of weeks. They are already burnt out and haven't logged in for several months now, and likely won't return even when SB hits. I still have yet to hit 60 with anything, and I will likely stretch out HW all the way to June.
I find that vertical progression just drives a lot of players nuts. Nothing stays relevant for a prolonged period of time. It's very similar to always trying to stay hip with the latest fashion and technological trends only for it to be outdated the following week. So I prefer a method that has me never reach the finish line, because once I do, burnout set in, and I stop logging in. I care about this game too much to allow that to happen.
That said, I don't plan on going anywhere anytime soon.
But no offline FF game asks you to do it for days of playtime. When you go from one FF to another, you start fresh, you discover a different gameplay, different cast, different lore...your characters improve, you unlock new skills, spells, etc...In FFXIV, the "discovery" part is but a tiny bit of your playtime, the rest is pure repetition, for 3 and a half years.
Frankly, to stay true to the franchise, I think every expansion should change the progression system.

I like what FFXIV is doing so far. I enjoy running the dungeons and the trials and the raids so I don't mind if I have to do it a gazillion times, it never gets boring to me. So if Stormblood brings more of the same, I'm all in.![]()
