I have no insight into SE's plans but if I had to guess, there is a quota of inclusive items like emotes, gear, and mounts. These would most likely be planed ahead of time, for example 2 free emotes per patch. These included items are budgeted for and are covered by the part of the budget paid for by our subs. Anything else has to have resources and man-hours allotted from outside the budget using funds from previous ventures as budgets move forward, never back.

Example, Thancred's new outfit that was released to the cash shop a while back. SE does not invest into that glam item hopeful to get its money back directly. That glam was most likely developed off of a budget derived from sale of another item. So again I don't know for real, but educated guessing says the sale of another item, say Melphena's costume, its profit was taken, and rolled into the development of the next item. This cycle will continue until the CS no longer makes money.

So something like /playdead isn't paying for itself, but is paying for the next emote or item.

Also note most price raises, despite the general public's assumption that its some cash grab, often find a source in labor. Something happened that caused the prices to go up, some new programmer(s), contract renegotiations, any number of things really.

My main beef with the Cash Grab is that these emotes/dresses/things are not account wide. At the bare minimum, any item that goes into the cash shop should be account wide, because if we're going to be made to pay for "extra" content, then it had better be in our hands 24/7 after that, otherwise why pay for it? Especially at such high prices.

My other beef with the Cash Grab is that there is nothing "extra" about this content. It takes time for them to develop, which means that they spend less time developing the rest of the game for regular subscribers. In other words, the quality of the game goes down, as does the value of a subscription. Every item they add to the Cash Grab is an item that could have gone towards giving me incentive to continually renew my subscription. At the rate that they are doubling down on the cash shop though, particularly with something so base as emotes, they will eventually drive away subscribers, especially if they keep on with cash shop exclusives.

As I have explained, in budgeting there is main project and side project. The main project is the main part of the game with costs covered by our subs. Side projects, short term developed content intended to return a higher yield, is seeded by capitol developed by other side projects and has its time and resources allotted separate from the main game's.

You lose nothing of the main game due to side projects as these teams are not random, sitting paperclips into the ceiling. The time is scheduled and project deadlines laid out with time allotted for all. Unless of course SE does business different from literally every business in the world.

And the worst part is, it won't even be a cool world and age like it is in Total Recall. Just boring old regular Earth except where everything costs and everything costs more.

You are confusing development projects and products. Are you a dev or in R&D? =-)

The way things are developed makes no difference to the end user, if the entirety is considered a single product. That is my gripe. When I buy the software I am buying access to the IP in an expansion (in my view)... and I pay a subscription for maintenance and support of that content (including server maintenance/access). The more content that is being re-classified as "out of scope" of purchase, the less value I perceive to be getting from that purchase.

Considering they publish expansions with incomplete content and expect us players to take it on faith more will be developed, delivering the value of the expansion- to say that some arbitrarily defined additional content (to be determined) is NOT included really leaves in question the value we are paying for up front and what the sub covers.
