If you want ____, run as a class that can roll need or ask your group if they can let you have it. Unless you ask for something, I'm needing and greeding everything that drops for seals (anima mats) or glamour (the true endgame) :x

I'm fully aware of people who go for gear in dungeons for glamour, but shouldn't that be even more of a reason for them to have to use the Greed command? I mean, YOU don't really need that gear anymore anyway since your level is higher, so why should you still be entitled to take it away automatically when someone else in your party might need it, regardless whether they are playing the class for it in a dungeon or not?
Because you can? Of course you can, and that's only because the game allows you to do it, so why wouldn't you!? That's why I'm saying the developers should change the use of the Need command to only be for players who are still leveling their classes so others won't abuse it. And it doesn't really matter if I can get the gear I want through playing with my friends or FC, some people might not have friends on this game believe it not, or aren't part of an FC because they prefer to play solo, so why should they be forced to do something they might feel uncomfortable with just because you want that piece of gear for your glamour or seal purposes? If you want seals so badly, why not try doing hunts or Fates for a change instead of simply taking gear away from people somebody else who might need it? And glamour is just a poor excuse for claiming your need for the Need command.
Also, it doesn't matter if someone will only use that certain piece of gear just for a single level or two or not, some people need that gear to get into higher level content or other things and giving the Need command players who don't need it anymore and only take it only because they can don't deserve to take it and should play their luck like everyone else who uses the Greed command.
My mindset has changed over the years at one point I would pass to let other players get the gear, but then I started noticing that majority of the time it hit the floor. So I went back to lotting what I needed be it for glamour, seals or desynth. Although I will gladly pass if a player asks me to if they need a piece of gear as an upgrade.
But no the system does not need changing you want a specific piece of gear go on that class. If your level isn't high enough on an alternate class then YOU DO NOT NEED IT.
Also if this did change then it would make certain deynth mats harder to get. This would result in higher prices for items that use those mats. So new people that need those HQ pieces from the market board would pay more gil.
I'm sorry but the game is not built for just DoW and DoM classes. Some people only play this game for craft and desynth and leveling/dungeons is just a side step to access those features.
Oh and another point, some people are doing Anima and they need the GC seals for upgrading their Anima. So is their upgrade worth less than yours?

If you aren't on that job and its not appropriately leveled to use it, you don't need it. Otherwise ask. Otherwise I'm gonna need on it.
Desynthesis is one of the easiest money makers in the game. It's multi-million gil profit every single patch (if you keep capping it.)
My Need is far greater than your Alt Job item level; unless you want to pay me for the gil I'll lose. For example: Desynthing hundreds of AS1 GSM drops during Light Farming and Expert Roulette Fending gear made me nearly 5 million gil this patch. Gil I can use to fully deck out MY alt jobs.

Again, you need it, play that job. You are stating that ilvl increase is superior version of need to all other purpose of need, which is only your own opinion. What happens if that piece of gear is BiS for someone despite being a lower ilvl than the currently slotted gear? Why is ilvl superior to glamour, seals, or desynth that needs leveling? Because that's how you prioritize them? C'mon now. The system is fine.I'm fully aware of people who go for gear in dungeons for glamour, but shouldn't that be even more of a reason for them to have to use the Greed command? If someone has no friends and needs some gear that happens to drop while they are on a different class, they can ask the party for dibs. I've never had a problem with that, and any time I've asked for gear in a DF run, I've gotten it, or at least gotten the person who can Need to Greed vs me. Communication is a thing, ya know.

I agree it's strange how the purpose of the Need and Greed buttons completely eludes most people. If the game allows only a certain role to roll need on a piece of gear, it's not to provide GC seals or desynth materials only to that specific role. It's to give priority for the people who can equip that type of gear for the purpose of using it. Otherwise we could just need on every piece of gear and not just our own role. Glamour has role restrictions and requires binding and keeping the piece so that falls under "using" the gear.At least from my perspective, this is one bizarre deviation from a trend towards otherwise being nicer and more helpful than WoW. While WoW's cultural rules pertaining to loot have become somewhat degraded and more varied over the years due to changes to the rules and the grouping system, originally the generally agreed upon rules were that main spec upgrades took priority over all other gear uses and you should pass or greed if it's not an upgrade in and of itself. Needing to disenchant, vendor, transmog, or for off-spec would generally be frowned upon. On the other hand, in this game it's basically need everything you can forever without a second thought and people would rather have some gil or whatever than let another player upgrade a piece of gear.
I've kept my habit of rolling greed on gear I intend to destroy or sell, but I've stopped asking if I could roll need for glamour purposes. It's end game here so people understand.
This is a different game with different norms. Better get used to it OP, because it's not going to change. Just be happy we still have tomes and tokens to farm instead of just random gear drops. Being at the mercy of RNG and other people's sense of etiquette in end game gearing isn't fun.

I dislike when people just plainly need on everything they can, automatically removes them from commendation list.
I don't need on items myself unless it's upgrade or glamour, if I want GC seals or gil, I greed for it.
My first 6 months in this game, I would rip into anyone I saw need on something they didn't need, and many (subjectively) others agreed with me. Now, 3 years in, I've just given up. FFXIV players don't have the same outlook as people in other games when it comes to Need/Greed. Not sure why.
How about no.
