Iirc Yoshi-P has stated in an interview surrounding the expansion of wards back then that you can actually report these people if they resell for unreasonable prices. If found guilty as charged GMs will take the house from them apparently (refunding money they'd spend on it) and free up the plot for purchase by someone else. I will try to find a source and update this post accordingly
update: Here's someone who apparently got warned for doing so (via reddit):
https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comme..._warnings_for/
There's more threads on it on reddit. I can't find a direct source quickly, but it seems he made the statement on E3's LIVE Letter, which coincides with my memory of the statement.

Yeah no. 45 days is plenty short enough.
Case 1) House owner of a mansion who plays every day for years, decides to go on a holiday for a month or 2 overseas.. Goodbye 50 million gil.. Why? Because they went on vacation?
Yeah no...
From the looks of your replies a lot of you are ignoring my post about a lot of owners having one of the few houses on this game and Rarely play the game at all.... they just lend it to a friend so they can give it back "should" they feel like comming back.. Just because they are too greedy to lose some in game gil.
But how does you agreeing with 45 days or finding it too short "solve" the problem of too little real estate?
The first way to solve this problem is by aknowledging that it excists! And I find that some people here seem to ignore that fact... maybe they are the ones that have more then one house?
A good start would be to limit 1 house to 1 character. Either you dedicate yourself to your FC (in wich case you could buy a room in your own fc house or make the house look like you live there. Or you join an FC yourself and keep your personal one.
Why should SE care if they do that? I mean someone has to log in and go into the house to keep it -> Subscription paid.
And nobody is ignoring the facts that it exists but there is a difference between trying to keep your house by logging in only once per month and buying it simply to sell it for more profit... Also lets not forget that there are probably enough people that just simply cant play right now for personal reasons. They are forced to log in every 45 days thus have to pay a subscription each month and yet you somehow want to make that short amount of time even shorter...like some said Yoshida himself was okay with people taking longer breaks but somehow us house owners are not allowed to do so..(I hate the timer, its like you can never take a break again..and I am quite sure that if I ever lose my house thanks to an unplanned illness..welp I would just delete the game..)
I always find it kinda sad that the community wants to punish the players instead of blaming those that made the mistake: SE! They choose a system that is so restricted and limited and at the same time never thought about things like a housing limit per character..and instead of owning up to their mistake they keep the system and on top of that punish their own playerbase thanks to the timer. (Which also means that they broke their own words about not having such a thing)
Sorry OP in the end I can understand those people that give the rights to others or only log in to save their house..people often saved a lot of gil to buy it and at the start of the housing system there was never a word about a timer so all of us believed that we will keep it forever..like a lot of games do. Its saddening that people have to do such things just because the devs cant make a new and better system..I would instantly change my personal housing plot for an instanced one..at least I could leave the game for some time and come back with all of my things intact..

I own a large house in Balmung (And have moved houses around a variety of wards). And do you know how often I see other people? I see the person that owns the house near mine maybe once or twice a week. One person on very rare occasions. I don't know why everyone acts like wards are bustling with activity. Even on Balmung, take a stroll through most of the newer wards (especially subdivisions). You won't see a lot of people unless its a ward that has a huge FC in it, which is rare. The older wards are dwindling too as people go inactive and houses get bought up by individuals or smaller, newer FCs.
The community argument is getting old. There's no community. It's clunky and limited, I'd much prefer instanced housing.

That is where you are wrong, I just said they "lend" their FC to another member or friend. Considering that friend didn't just pay his/her subscription to save the house, and the original owner isn't paying at all.. thats not a win situation for SE.
If it were up to me, I'd save the housing for the FC owners and force "loners" to get an appartment instead because those houses are too big for just one person anyway.
I'd rather not go down this road but if SE won't solve the problem another way.. I fear this might be the only sollution.

I've always felt SE's housing system was too small. All of the competitor housing system's I've tried have been either larger, or MUCH larger - also everyone could get one. I've enjoyed the larger space options from other games, also usually these larger space options = instance which means more customization too (although LotR for example had wards like FFXIV's with larger plots to work with, they also auto generated themselves too so LotR didn't experience the issues as hard as FFXIV does - basically LotR does it better).
In comparison to other games, besides graphics (which are always great), SE's housing system is a strong 4/10 XD.

I'd support instanced housing under a few conditions.
1.) The only limitation on housing size is a person's gil. None of this "personal homeowners only need a small/apartment/one-room shack/inn room" BS. Put limitations like that on and I know I'll just be making a solo-player FC on an alt to enjoy all the unlimited functions of housing including extra garden plots and item placement space. I'm sure I wouldn't be alone in this.
2.) The demo timer is removed. I wouldn't stand for this if housing were a truly available experience for everyone and the devs still want to hide behind their "we want everyone to have a chance at housing" subscription money-grab.
3.) This is purely personal, but I'd be hard-pressed to give up my gorgeous spot in the Lavender Beds in the NW corner of the zone with its excellent view of the waterfall. It would be nice if instanced housing still mimicked the locations of non-instanced housing so I could keep my dream view while also letting others have the choice of also having it.
I'd realistically learn to live with any sort of open-to-all housing system even IF it screws me over as a personal home owner already, but it would be nice if we were considered if/when the dev team decides to make a sweeping change like that.
