It's starting to get annoying - people that never play on that character, take popular names. Just rename those lvl1 inactive characters (I am pretty sure that it shouldnt be the case for lvl60, or atleast 1 level 60). It gets annoying when I want to have X name on a server while that person hasn't logged in for months, if not, years. Frustrating.

I mean, with a first and last name option, its not hard to really get a decent name. This isn't World of Warcraft where you only have 1 name. Like the name Sarah? You could be Sarah Smith, Sarah Baker, Sarah Crowley, Sarah Brown, etc...

I don't think OP wants SE to delete the characters, just for them to create a system where after a period of time their name becomes available, and they will need to choose a new name if they log back in.

Also how would you propose defining popular names? It's against ToS to use a copyrighted name (though nobody actually cares): Naming Right. You may not use any name or other intellectual property belonging to Square Enix or any other third party in your use of the Game (for example, naming a character after a celebrity, company, product, or superhero).

So are we saying generic names which just happen to be widely liked around the entire globe and multiple servers?

I had a friend come back after a year and a half who never made it to 50 previously. So this wouldn't be a great option.

This isn't an uncommon system for MMO's. WoW has a system where you can contact a GM and ask them if a name has been inactive long enough and if it has they can free the name up for you to use. Games like TERA have also done that where if a person hadn't logged in for a certain amount of time, their name was freed up and the character is flagged for a rename. That doesn't always mean just because your name was freed up that you'll lose it, if you've chosen a very unique name then it's highly unlikely that it will be taken from you. It doesn't mean the character gets deleted, only that someone else can get the name if the person hadn't logged in for a while, if someone hasn't logged in for 2-3 years though? I don't see why they shouldn't have their names freed up. I am perfectly fine with that system.

That being said, when you mean popular names, I can only guess that you're referring to completely unoriginal people that lack any sort of creativity and name their character after some popular character from a video game or a book or an anime or a tv show despite it specifically stated as being against the ToS. I'd rather names like that be locked out entirely (looking at all you Kirito/Asuna/Sephiroth/Cloud/Squall wannabes) and I certainly report them when I see them because it's against the ToS.

Why wouldn't it? Your friend would still have their character, but due to being away for a whole year and a half, I think it's fair that the name goes back on the market (Hell, if someone else hasn't taken it, they can just choose the same name and get it back)
