I don't think SE should block famous names or character names as in real life, people may be actual named like that and would like to use their name. My doctor has the exact name of a well known baseball player and my friend's friend was foolish enough to name his kid after an anime character. This stuff happens.

Okay I will chip in and say, for RPers and non RPers who like to lurk around and cosplay as NPCs it's really frustrating to find the NPC name has been taken by some doink who hasn't logged, nor done anything for years and likely never will but the name will sit there and you end up having to do variation. It's not end of the world but it's frustrating. I think people who ask for inactive names to be freed are those who want to pick NPCs rather than run around as Natsu Twinsword or whatever is popular nowadays.

That being said, when you mean popular names, I can only guess that you're referring to completely unoriginal people that lack any sort of creativity and name their character after some popular character from a video game or a book or an anime or a tv show despite it specifically stated as being against the ToS. I'd rather names like that be locked out entirely (looking at all you Kirito/Asuna/Sephiroth/Cloud/Squall wannabes) and I certainly report them when I see them because it's against the ToS.

This isn't an uncommon system for MMO's. WoW has a system where you can contact a GM and ask them if a name has been inactive long enough and if it has they can free the name up for you to use. Games like TERA have also done that where if a person hadn't logged in for a certain amount of time, their name was freed up and the character is flagged for a rename. That doesn't always mean just because your name was freed up that you'll lose it, if you've chosen a very unique name then it's highly unlikely that it will be taken from you. It doesn't mean the character gets deleted, only that someone else can get the name if the person hadn't logged in for a while, if someone hasn't logged in for 2-3 years though? I don't see why they shouldn't have their names freed up. I am perfectly fine with that system.

Agreed with this /op so long as the time it takes for your name to become available is quite a duration, and that the name isn't removed unless used by another. Of course not deleting the character if the character is old, which is sort of that the title sounds likes (delete old characters lol). Just relinquish the name on old inactive accounts, of any level, based specifically on duration inactive.

This sort of system is pretty standard, it's not that great to let people lockdown names like that anyways you're just going to get more and more silly "misspellings" to get the name they would have had if they could have had it heh.

While that's a bit harsh, names like that are usually a good indicator of terrible players. Along with mancat and/or an excessive amount of unnecessary apostrophes.

Also how would you propose defining popular names? It's against ToS to use a copyrighted name (though nobody actually cares): Naming Right. You may not use any name or other intellectual property belonging to Square Enix or any other third party in your use of the Game (for example, naming a character after a celebrity, company, product, or superhero).

So are we saying generic names which just happen to be widely liked around the entire globe and multiple servers?

Maybe the devs should add middle name to make 100% sure your name of choice is free so long you don't post it before creating the character.

NPC roleplay via naming is also technically against TOS. I see no problem with it at all when it's just a fan having fun rather than impersonating actual staff, but at the same time I can see why bringing in a whole system to protect rule breakers isn't topmost on their list of tasks.

(I have nothing against people with copied names, whether they're a Kirito or the popular Japanese equivalent of someone named after food rather than sticking to lore. I know a ton of players with silly names along the lines of Strawberry Candyfloss or Happy Banana. But I'm struggling to come up with a reason for this request in context that isn't a clear violation of the naming rule. The random name suggestion button exists. Choosing a different server is another option if you're new anyway.)
