ehm there is an hate-o-meter in the game yet if you switch it on in the options.

am i the only one who is really suspicious about the new engine?

    New FFXIV
    Old FFXIV

Well i personally dont like the screenshot at all... these colorful colors, the textures seem to me very "cartoonie" and not that sharp, no texture bump mapping like now.

it looks like an "AION", "Rift", "WoW", "Insert typical MMOrpg from today here" with these powerful colors, the big sword... i hope that this wont come true.

what i like about the screen is the typical FInal Fantasy hand cursor when targeting a target.
and the boss mob seems to have three parts which can be attacked .

are they downgrading the graphic engine to cartoonie optic to make it possible to run it on the ps3? well lets see... i dont like the shot.

ya that what i thought when i saw it but people keep saying it look better i don't understand people sometime i guess people like that type of art look. I hope we allow to change the look of the game to look more real and less colorful.

I really want to know how the hell that looks cartoony. And, FFXIV currently uses Normal maps, not bump. Bump would be going a step backwards.

Powerful colors? Everything looks pretty dark and muted to me honestly. And the big sword? Because big swords are something new to Final Fantasy? (Cloud, Tidus, Squall... hell Sephiroth has a freaking 6ft long sword)

I think some of the UI elements are being unnecessarily tweaked in this image (if this is a concept of what they'd like to do.) I don't need glowing bars and symbols, and I think the chat box looks even more confusing to look at than the one we have currently. Minimalistic and simple is the way to go with this game in my opinion. I want things there for me to look at if necessary, but I don't want it constantly catching my eye instead of the fight. I also don't want stuff all over the screen either. A lot of the information I get from the fight I see by just watching it, rather than reading. I know some people cannot, but I play on a large tv and can see things like when a mob is readying something or when it says "incapacitation" etc on a mob depending on what you're doing to it. And the text for that isn't over the top either. It doesn't draw too much attention away from the fight and it informs you, which is welcomed in my eyes.

Edit: Btw, who thinks they should add a "block" text over your character if you block with a shield? lol (It doesn't seem to show a proper blocking animation so you can do phalanx or something... it seems to just be doing such things blind right now unless you read your text box.)

I really really really don't see the comparison to Rift or Aion or WoW. It actually looks a lot like The Last Remnant, which is another SE title, when looking at its dark colors.

well you mean, when looking at its colorful colors...

or you can compare the colorful look to FFXIII-2 which dont has to be a good think.

    FFXIII-2

    FFXIII-2
Those are the same colors as in FFVIII, IX, X, X-2, and XII. And Kingdom Hearts. And Dissidia.

    ... and NOT FFXIV 2.0

i like the more realistic look in FF11/FF14... i mean.. look at this aussum view down to [Ul'dah]
Final Fantasy XIV Ul'dah (in bigger size its even better)

FFXIV has a realistic , living world right now... and now putting the double more of color into the engine.. more shadows and muddy textures on the ground etc.. to make it run on ps3.. yes it seems to me very "plastic" like an "AION" yes..

If you compare it to my screenshot of ul'dah the new screen doesnt have a "real" look at all. its totally overdone with colors and shades. and look at the sword and the textures on the ground.. this doesnt look "real" anymore. the world now, Ul'dah for example, looks to me more "real"

    click

    Old:
    Screen
    Screen
    Screen
Screen1 (great ground textures with bump mapping, better than in FFXIII)

well its just only one screenshot.. and its my opinion for now to this.
i think they downgrade the optic to keep it run on a ps3. we all know. the graphics of FFXIV are very hardware eating when you switch all to maximum.

I see what you mean, but until we get future screenshots I guess it's hard to judge. Optimizing the graphics/textures/engine (even maps) may mean loosing some of our epic-ness like in your Ul'dah screenshot. =(
