Mentors are useless
Mentors are useless
It's already been answered for the most part, but I figure I should add that the main problem with the mentor system isn't necessarily bad players getting the title because of low requirements, but rather players with bad attitudes. Unfortunately there's no way to filter out those with bad attitudes.
Some people also do hold mentors to silly expectations too, looool. I did Ifrit NM the other day as a MCH for leveling roulette and the marauder couldn't hold aggro, even after I stopped DPS. He was a sprout and I know marauders can have a rough go of holding aggro at low levels anyhow so I didn't feel the need to nitpick the guy, so I just kinda tanked the boss, loool. As I was leaving, the healer, a returner, goes "great mentor". Didn't feel like picking an argument so I ignored it (because that would be the unmentorly thing to do). :P Perhaps some of the people who complain though are similar to that; or even better, they've been given friendly advice by a mentor, got offended, then threw a fit? (We all know how some people receive advice in this game.)

My general thought of the mentor system. Everyone gets along, someone misses a mechanic, and then party chat lights up. Next...........................mentor gets flamed for pointing out the issue. I just LOL!

My issue is going into an instance have a bonus baby and the mentors in the party not explain anything...leaving it up to me as tank to give a few clues on bosses. OR one i had 2 days ago running ahead and picking up agro and causing excess stress on the bonus baby healer.
Edit for spelling

2.5 months is enough time to complete the story for ARR and HW, level 3 jobs to 60, get 300 commendations, and do however many dungeons that is?My theory is based on sales. Recently, with Steam sales, I've seen tons of newbie AuRa. This sudden backlash (in the west anyway, dunno about JP and other eastern countries) I'm going to guess is a result of the Christmas/New Years sales. All those new people have made mentor status now. Also, this game is T for Teen. When going into the Novice Network, some could be expecting level headed adults, but you could very well be getting emotionally strung teenagers and fresh out of high school college students who think they know the world better than anyone because they're in college now.
I'm skeptical that there could be THAT MANY people both willing and capable of doing that.
Btw I'd also like to challenge people who are coming in here to post blanket statements about mentors being awful or ruining their parties or killing their dogs: replace the word "mentor" with any other group of people and see if you still like the way that sounds.
Blanket statements about a group of people are basically always wrong. Do some people suck? Of course. Are some of them going to be mentors? Law of averages says yes. Does that mean that mentors are some monolithic entity that all think and behave the same way? Somehow I trust you all to know the answer to that last one.
Blanket statements aren't made with an eye toward precise accuracy; they're made to communicate a point. Provided everyone knows what is meant (and, really, you'd have to be willfully obstinate not to), there's no real harm done. This is an internet forum, after all.Blanket statements about a group of people are basically always wrong. Do some people suck? Of course. Are some of them going to be mentors? Law of averages says yes. Does that mean that mentors are some monolithic entity that all think and behave the same way? Somehow I trust you all to know the answer to that last one.
So the net result of your 'challenge' to people is to distract from a very real issue. I don't really see the value in that.
As an aside, the vast majority of the criticism directed toward Mentors almost certainly arises from the fact that people do, in fact, expect them to be both (a) better players than average, and (b) friendlier than average. The problem is that there is nothing in the Mentor requirements that ensure condition (b) holds (no, the Commendation system isn't sufficient; people are routinely Commended for their play rather than their attitude). Until, and unless, this changes, drama surrounding the Mentor system will likely persist. No nitpicking you do regarding others' choice of words is going to change that logical reality.
Is it true that Mentors are turning their crown off because they don't want to be associated with the stigma surrounding mentors?
Mean it wouldn't surprise me, a few bad apples and we're all bad.
Look at the recent thread of a newbie getting kicked for doing poor dps, i didn't believe we had been given the full story and those who did offer advice were called elitist.
But you know clearly it was the mentor that's in the wrong.
